How can I earn money by writing product reviews?
Reviews of some products will be awarded a small cash payment every time a
member rates them "helpful", "very helpful" or "exceptional". To take
advantage of this, write high-quality reviews about these products to
ensure that you receive numerous positive ratings by other members.
How are earnings for member ratings calculated?
Your earnings for ratings of your reviews by other members are
calculated by multiplying the number of ratings per review by the
remuneration rate for each of the reviews written. These totals
are then added up and your overall earnings calculated once a month.
In case of half pennies, the total is rounded up in members’ favour.
What are the different rates of remuneration
on offer?
0.5p per rating, 1p per rating or 2p per rating. For some reviews,
you will not be paid anything for ratings. The different rates of
remuneration are indicated by pound signs which appear next to the
name of the product on the product overview page when you have logged in.
These symbols are not visible from any of the other product information
tabs. The different payment levels are as follows: no pound sign is
shown for non-remunerated products, one pound sign indicates 0.5p per
rating, two pound signs 1p and three pound signs 2p.
How is it decided how much ratings for a particular
review are worth?
Because of the way Ciao is financed (by its Merchant Partners and advertising clients),
some products and categories are of a greater financial importance to Ciao than others
– and the more money Ciao earns, the more it can give back to the Ciao community.
There are four different rates of remuneration for positive review ratings
(0, 0.5, 1 or 2 pence per rating). The remuneration rate is determined, in part, by
the combination of the level of non-member interest in the product or category, and
the number of reviews already available concerning it. So a product which generates a
lot of interest, but about which a review has yet to be written, would have a higher
remuneration rate than one with the same level of interest but numerous reviews.
To respond to changes in interest levels, the remuneration rates are reassessed and
republished at the beginning of each month. Remuneration for ratings in the previous
month is unaffected.
How often is the remuneration rate changed?
Review rating remuneration rates are reassessed and republished
at the beginning of each month.
Do I earn more for writing the first review
about a product?
Yes. If you are the first member to review a product in a pay-per-rating category,
you will be paid twice as much for the positive ratings your review receives as the
rate indicated by the pound signs next to the product name. You will receive double
the rate for the first month after you publish the review only. Thereafter, ratings will be
remunerated at the usual rate.
How exactly does the Premium Fund work?
We offer the authors of particularly high-quality reviews - reviews which
really make it easier for readers to make product decisions - extra rewards.
Each month, a “Premium Fund” of £2000 is divided out between the best authors. Please note that Ciao Cafe reviews are excluded from the Premium Fund.
Why doesn't Ciao publish the algorithm used
in calculating Premium Fund earnings?
The Premium Fund is, for the most part, automatically shared out. Various
quality measures are taken into account, such as the length of the review,
the author’s objectivity and the level of interest which (s)he demonstrates.
Please understand that, in the interests of avoiding abuse and bias, we
cannot make the exact selection process public.
How can I find out which of my reviews have
earned money from the Premium Fund?
