The reason why I chose to use Freeserve as my ISP is because it was the first disc that I could lay my hands on. The service has always been quite good, the connection speeds were resonable and in general the e-mail service that I used was quite good.
For a long time I used hotmail.com, when I was at work or University as I wanted an e-mail account that I could access from anywhere. As hotmail.com is probably about the most well known web based e-mail service I chose them. Then around a year ago I stumbled accross fsmail.net, a site which Freeserve were developing. This was a web based e-mail service much like hotmail, but thge advantage that this service had is if you already have an e-mail account set-uo with Freeserve you can view your mail. When you access this at home again the e-mail gets downloaded and your inbox on the web based site will be cleared. I have found this service to be extremly useful because I can now have only the one e-mail account which I can access from anywhere.
The service of this site is generally quite good and if there is going to be any work done to the site they give you good notice (this is good as they seem to want to keep their customers happy). The site is quite fast compared to the hotmail.com site, this I think is partly due to the fact that they offer a simpler service, just the web based e-mail. I also think it is faster as they don't have too many advert banners. On the odd accasion, if you connection or computer is slow the service will time-out and you will end up at the login screen again. The site enables you to create a directory structure to store your messages in, which is quite useful, any messages that you delete will be deleted when you log out. As far as I know there is no limit on the amount of messages that you can store as I have donwloaded them at home (but I should think there is).
To access this website you can use the following url: www.fsmail.net or access it through Freeserve.com. I would recomend this service to any Freeserve user, but I wouldn't recomend it to someone who is using another ISP (I would suggest checking to see whether they offer a similar service).
~~Updated - 06/02/2001~~ From the homepage of Freeserve there are so many things that you can do. There are numerous links to places where you can purchase any sort of item that you wish. There are also links to chat rooms, onlineauctions, you can check to see if your domain name is free. There is also a fully functional search engine, which is quite good (if a little slow).
At the moment I am on Freeserve's normal service, so basically I just pay for the local call, as I have no need for their other services. The services that Freeserve do run though are Freeserve HomeTime (which uses BT Surf Together or BT Talk & Surf Together) and costs £8.99 a month. They also run a service called Freeserve Plus, this is internet access via ADSL (so it would be fast), but this service is not available in all areas and would cost a lot more than the normal service.
