Freewebs.com

Freewebs is a free web files hosting service, the service itself has been around since early 2001 and now has 12 million members. Although the company originally only offered the web hosting service, they now have other services such as photo hosting, blog’s, profiles and widgets which have brought the site more up to date with user’s needs and expanded Freewebs market.

-Web Hosting-

Free webs sites are advertising supported and offer members 40 megabytes of storage and 0.5 gigabytes of bandwidth, however if you want to remove the ads from your web pages or require more bandwidth you can purchase a premium package that will increase your bandwidth and web space so you can store more files and have a higher amount of people that can download files from your site.

Premium packages range from between $49.95 per year and $249.99 a year for different amounts of space and bandwidth.

The premium package contents are as follows.

Basic Package - $49.99 a year
Ad Free - Yes
Band width – 5gb
Web Space - 300mb
Domain Names – No
E-mails - No

Enhanced Package - $99.99 a year
Ad Free - Yes
Band width – 25gb
Web Space - 750mb
Domain Names – Yes With Annual Subscriptions
Emails – 5

Pro - $249.99
Ad Free - Yes
Band width – 100gb
Web Space - 2500mb
Domain Names – No
Emails - 15

Also becoming a paying member will remove the site is hosted by Freewebs link from the footer of the website which makes the site look more professional?

The websites themselves on the web hosting can either be created with an easy to use website create tool which has several layouts you can chose from and add content to or the ability to upload your own files through free webs custom upload tool.

The Freewebs system also offers some other add on features that adds dynamic features to the website such as, Hit Counters, Shout Boxes, Guest Books, Image Albums, Web Pools, Blogs, rating and Comments, and the most recent feature of adding a forum to your site.
Overall the web hosting itself has good ease of use for the end user of the site however it may lack in being able to create a website purely to the end uses needs and lacks full flexibility for the use as you have to pay for some features.

-Photos-
The website has recently being trying to market new features and now offers a service that hosts personal image albums like Photobucket.com and MySpace.com .

The features it offers for this are :
• Choose how you want to display your pictures
• Create as many albums as you want to
• Add titles and captions for your pictures
• Add background music and special effects
• Get thumbnails and enlarged views for each picture
• Choose who sees photos: the world or just your friends.
Although at first I didn’t think this would be a pleasant service to use for image storage I was pleasantly surprised at the nice easy service and itss fast and reliable.
-Blogs-
The new blog feature included with the websites is also an attempt via Freewebs to join into new markets such as Blogger.com and MySpace.com blogs have tapped into.

The features included on the blogs system include:
• Instantly publish your blogs posts
• Read comments vistors leave on your blog
• Add pictures, video, music, games and more
• Share your blog content via RSS feeds
• Automatically archive your older entries
• Allow other bloggers to link directly to your entries
• Import an existing blog from many popular sites

This a feature may appeal to many bloggers although it hasn’t to me as to many other sites offer blogs and I’m not really a blogger anyway, although I did the think the system was nice and easy to use.

-Profiles-

Freewebs now also offers a myspace.com or bebo.com style profile that allows you to do many things including adding a profile picture and much more!

The features included in the profiles include:
• A Profile picture
• List your favorites: music, books and other interests
• Browse through profiles
• Find people like you (or just people you like)
• Add friends and leave comments on their profile pages
• Send and receive private messages
• Import an existing profile from other sites
This system to me seems like a pure commercial gimmick to stay inline with other Web 2.0 sites such as YouTube, MySpace and Bebo these service is also suprisngly similar to my space profiles and could be considered a rip off by some.

One thing I don’t understand is why a site that is supposedly to be there to provide a web hosting, provides many social networking tools although it may make the site more money commercially.

-Widgets-

The widget system on the site unlike many other sites doesn’t allow you to take the widgets off site and post them on sites such as Bebo or Myspace and just allows you to use them as Freewebs features! However it does allow you to add them from other sites such as YouTube!

Widgets included are:
• ShoutBox: Live chat right on your page
• Video: Insert your own or even one from YouTube
• Ratings & Comments: For the opinionated
• Games: Choose from our library of games
• Guestbook: Collect messages from visitors
• Polls: Ask any question, people vote right on your site
• Forms: Create a web form to collect info from visitors
• Counter: See your site traffic in a customizable counter
As stated above in the web hosting section. These features will generally make your Freewebs website more dynamic and more enjoyable for people to use.

-Being a user-

Signing up is quick and easy all that’s needed is that you have an email address, password and username, you must also agree to there terms of use which can be found at http://members.freewebs.com/page.jsp?page=termsOfUse, its always important to read the terms of use on these types of sites when signing up as you don’t want to violate copyright or get your Freewebs closed.

Once you have signed up you will be asked to choose a deign for your website which is quick and easy all you need to do is follow the steps/

-Credibility-

The credibility of a Freewebs hosted site is questionable and may be seen as unprofessional to be used by a major company or even a small one, these sites should mainly be used for hobby pages and things your interested in as I believe trying to sell a product or present yourself as professional may be hard.

-Freewebs URL/Web Address-.

One more thing I must mention is that you username if you sign up will also be your web address such as if your username was Monkey Business your Freewebs URL would also be http://www.freewebs.com/monekybuisness, although if you have a premium package you can get a major domain TLD such as a .com or .net!

-Conclusion-

In conclusion Freewebs is a vibrant site with many modern web features that allow users to do more then just have a simple website, however these features aren’t for everyone and if you’re looking to make a professional website you shouldn’t be looking here!

Also if you are looking for something more professional with a service like this you will have to pay for it so you may like to think of this as Not all Freewebs but some are lol.

The future of Freewebs is bright if they keep up to date with new technologies and fads that the internet sees all the time and this a nice place to have a website as long as its not a professional website.
