I ahve only recently discovered the auctions at Freeserve and was surprised to find out just how much fun they were. I was looking for something in particular on the internet(an old computer game that has een out of print for years) and this was one of the last places on my list to look...I found it almost immediately. Bidding is a piece of cake, simply register with the site and then leave your bid amount in the space provided and wait, bidding more if outbid etc. the same as in ordinary auctions.
The only problem I have with this is that there is quite a long delay between the time the auction actually starts and the time it ends - often days sometimes weeks from the date the item is placed and this is a bit of a drag, but then you can pick up some real bargains here as well. There are lots of different kinds of auctions - some items starting from as low as 1p.
Dealing with the seller is done through email and as you must do this yourself - ie. independantly of Freeserve, I guess there is an element of risk involved here but I have yet to have any problems so far.
Overall then, an interesting idea and one which I'm sure you will find to be both useful and fun as well.
