The public area offers a huge chioce of 'open' areas, which include health information, travel info, personal finance, news and entertainment. The health pages are extremely helpful, as it makes great use of HIV and Aids information/education as well as a very helpful medication information.
Yes the site is very much geared towards gay men, but also bisexual men and gay women will find this site of interest.
The chat area is very much about meeting one-night stand sexual partners, and I cannot believe that it would be a suitable meeting place for a long term romantic encounter. This of course is my personal view based on observations of chat room activities.
Overall the site offers a great way to while away the hours in front of your PC.
Sometimes there can be some delay in site page retrieval, as the site makes great use of Javascript for their menu driven structure and text display. So on a 56K modem it may feel slow, but DSL users should find it quick.

...The chat rooms available on gay.com are outstanding. Compared with most sites on the internet, and the well outdated irc rooms, this makes a refreshing place to visit and just have a chat.
There are endless possibilities here for meeting people in the same area as where you live and same the interests - the chat rooms cater for pretty much everything. With hundreds of chat rooms for the UK available - many of which are very crowded - there is something ... ...talking to.
I use gay.com to chat to people about all sorts of things, from gardening to... well - your imagination dictates the limits.
Not a place for kids this, but for the average gay man it offers a lot. Apart from the chat rooms, there are newsletters, lots of gay related news on the site, free e-mail and if you just want to chat to people all over the world you can do that too.

Tired of searching for gay chatrooms which end up being filled with people too far away to be of much interest.
www.gay.com has a huge selection of chat rooms, cleverly broken down into regions, one of which must be close to you.
Also on offer is a free E-mail service, forums and shopping specially tailored towards the gay user.

...improvements, making my time at gay.com more enjoyable. Here are my views:
First up the chat room is fantastic. The fact you can chat to people in and around your own area or have a chat with someone down under. The choice is endless:
Why not enter into one of the theme chats instead, Plenty to choose from including Bears, Love, Cyber, Feet and plenty plenty more in an easy to navigate chat area.
*Also when in the chat area you can pvt people ... ...is yet more to come. Gay.com does not offer only chat but how do you fancy an easy to remember gay.com email address and its free. Sign up to gay.com which is also free and the email facility is provided with the membership.
So what else can you do you ask?
Profiles, set up your own and put pics on and everything about you so visitors to gay.com can search profiles and may see you, when in a chat room, the other chatters can view your profile. ...

Advantages: easy to pull Disadvantages: very hard to find any real people that are just looking to chat
gay.com is a great site if you want to pull or find that perticulay one night stand your looking for but not if all you want to do is chat and meet new and interesting people. every person i spoke to was more interested in what i looked like and weather i wanted to meet up with them than anything els it would be nice to find a gay chat room that isnt just one big meat market. i was not disapointed with this site as its easy to navigate but i am geting ...

Quality of Discussions
Quick review of gay.com
The old gay.com was a gem. The "new and improved" gay.com has been an utter disaster. System is down daily for either "planned" maintenance as they call it or it just plain crashes. Scores of rooms have been eliminated in the update including my local room. Its loaded with glitches and hopefully they will restore some of the features that were eliminated. Good luck! ...
