As a wise man once said, "Every bag of shite has a spark of gold". My particular bag of shite, however, arose from the Job Bastards known as Roke Manor Research. Due to the "global downturn in technology industries", I was sacked from a job before I had begun. Now, having been a student for seven (count 'em) years, I've amassed a fair bit of debt owing to a piss-poor government system. In any case, the time has come for me to 'leave school' and join the Real World and how will I go about it? Initially, by acquainting myself with my best friend, the Internet, which may turn out to be the afore-mentionned spark of gold.
It's been a good pal of mine, seen me through good times and bad. There have been times when the Document Has Contained No Data, or sometimes the page I seek has packed its bags and gone without so much as a heart-wrenching goodbye! I was unsure of what to expect from online recruitment, but as yet I have been surprised.
I started my search with gojobsite.co.uk. It's simple to use, has an option to concentrate on areas of the UK (such as Scotland, ahem). It advertises on the website on behalf of recruitment agencies so unfortunately the immediate employer is not visible (and has caused some embarrassment, more of that later). It does, however, give details such as the job description, location and may also provide a start date and salary range.
A facility for submitting a c.v. is also available, but several folks I know in the recruitment business suggest only registering with one/two agencies. Some operate on the principle of shoving out your c.v. to all and sundry on the offchance that they may have a vacancy. This is good and well, but do you really want 18 copies of your c.v. arriving on someones desk. You may become memorable, but for all the wrong reasons…. Desperation is never attractive. The c.v. is submitted in text form, so remember to remove all fancy shenanigans if you want to end up with a legible document.
In any case, I sought an opportunity in research, ideally in lasers/optics. Although the UK has a fairly small lasers operation, the results were encouraging. Positions ranging from technicians through to MD's were advertised across the UK in a variety of work environments. I was dissappointed with the information given, however. I found an interesting position advertised and contacted the recruitment agency concerned directly. I received a phone call the next day, saying that the company were most interested. I enquired about who they were. On being told it was my current supervisor's ex-company, I politely declined! Oops. Still, I couldn't have foreseen that. Or could I?
In the interest of consumer research (or boredom, you decide), I also ventured out of the lasers field (filled with cowpats and used needles) into the greener, lusher pastures of IT. Again, I was met with a swathe of opportunities promising silks and satins, the likes of which ye have never seen. Or at least, a load of jobs that didn't sound too bad at all.
I've bookmarked gojobsite, but haven't registered for their email updates as I prefer not to have a heaving inbox. I will, however, be sure to keep an eye on new opportunities posted therein. The site is simple to use, allows a Boolean search (lasers NOT Go-Go-dancing-and-nudey-modelling, for example) and seems to offer a wide range of posts.
With sites like this, hopefully I won't be unemployed for TOO long….!
Advantages: easy to use and fast site, huge range of jobs Disadvantages: none
GoJobSite.co.uk, you may think oh no not another clone of a website advertising jobs. Advantages: Good, simple search facility, can be sent job bulletins by email Disadvantages: Many ads appear to be trawling for CVs - vague, with no real job
Personally, I rate this site the best;
it is easy to use, you can easily set up a profile to search for jobs, and it doesn't have restrictive categorisation - that is to say, you don't have to select "Database management" before you can specify your key words. Particularly useful if you want to make sure you are covering the whole sector.
You can load your CV details onto the site, which is a little unwieldy, but no worse than other sites. Once ... ...them your CV. There is some standard text for expressing interest, though it is so basic I'd have thought it no bad idea to make more of a proper covering letter. From there on, you're really in the hands of the agency that posted the ad...
...and that's the one weak point. There doesn't seem to be *that* much quality control on the ads, with the result (at least with IT jobs) that there's plenty of the generic "looking for a trainer, £25k" type ...

Advantages: Easy to use, site stores your details for next time. Disadvantages: Don't seem to get many follow up calls.
In August last year my husband got made redundant from a 40k job in the city, later the next month he managed to chop half of his finger off. So he was off work for a while , this was when we found gojobsite. It was simple to register, choosing if you want e-mail updates or not. Advantages: jobs via email and WAP Disadvantages: mainly IT jobs
GoJobsite, formerly Jobsite.co.uk, is one of the most popular job boards.
It enables you to search for relevant jobs under the geographic location, under the salary that you want, job title etc.
The site enables you to set up your own job criteria and have relevant jobs emailed to you and you can even look and recieve via WAP.
There is a customer support number as well where people can call for advice which i think is important as Job hunting can be quite stressful and its nice to speak to a real person at the end of a telephone.
It seems to mainly have IT positions and not that many specialist or specific positions which may reduce the amount of relevant jobs available ...

Advantages: Free, can find jobs not local to you Disadvantages: Very poor use of databases and search facilities
on a job should be searchable within user defined limits. They also need to stop forcing you to search for certain fields as happens on some sites. Salary, job title, skills, location (let us type it in if we don't like what's on your list), permanent/contract and date the job was posted should all be available.
I wouldn't recommend that anyone use gisajob.com in order to search for the jobs that are on the market at the moment. Use reed.co.uk or gojobsite.co.uk which are slightly better. At some point I may submit my own CV to gisajob.com and see what happens (although the tales of harassment from numptys at recruitment firms does give me pause for though). Whatever the results are I'll update my reviews at that point. For now I think you're better off with your local newspaper.
Please Note: The 'Ease of Registration' and 'Customer ...
