Review of "goodreads.com"
Thank you for all the love towards my "Terror of the Tongs" DVD review.
An entertaining database of books people have read, are reading and want to read, with an emphasis on reader ratings and reviews. It has grown out of the now defunct Visual Bookshelf app on Facebook into a social network site in its own right. The design of the site is attractive and easy to navigate. In order to start a reading list or post a review you must register for free. You then get a profile page which will track the books you rate (out of five stars) plus any reviews you write. You can can also comment on other people's reviews and add other members to a list of friends so you will be updated on their posts. Unlike ciao.co.uk there is no payment for any contributions you make.
As well as the core book reviewing element, there is also a large forum for readers and writers and magazine like articles and profiles of authors and new books. There are also special interest groups which members can join or set up their own, similar to Facebook or Yahoo.According to an author friend of mine this site is used a lot by independent booksellers as an alternative research tool to Amazon. According to him, positive reviews for new books can have an influence on sales, so it may be worthwhile promotional tool for self-publishers too.
This is an extremely comprehensive and polished site and as long as the current rate of membership activity continues, I can't see why it shouldn't become as established as IMDB.
