GRC will then run a series of tests on your ports to see how much information you are giving away to everyone and some of the information can be quite shocking.
The whole process takes about 5 minutes and it gives you a page on information listing every port it has managed to probe and what it has found out.There is also a statement from grc to say that no information that they discover will be passed on and will be destroyed.
The site gives you tips on improving your internet security and it also has quite a few pages of F.A.Q`s to help you understand what it all means to you and your personal details.
After it has finished you will probably want to install a firewall well if you do then i suggest you hop on over to www.zonelabs.com and download their free firewall which is an excellent freebie and only takes about 12 minutes to download.Hope this helps

The GRC Website has been written very well in extremenly advanced programming language in order to let any internet user find out how vulnerable his computer is against invasion by hackers and the like. It first determines you IP, Internet Protocol address and then probes your ports to see if they are vulnerable. If they are vulnerable an automated message suggests what you should do. The site above is part of Steve Gibson's Research website and looks at some of the various "download assistants" on offer today. For example, it is alleged that certain "Spyware" software actually spy on your downloads. The URL of every file you click on to download is sent to a particular website for logging. On YOUR computer right now, there may be several files working silently away to themselves, informing organisations ... ...You can download a program, called OptOut, that will scan your computer's files and registry to check for instances of these unwelcome hacks.
You can follow other peoples thoughts on the web-based forum or choose to subscribe to the newsletter.
Anybody who wants to know more about this subject should work their way through this site, maybe pick up a packet sniffer, and see for themselves exactly what information is entering and leaving their machines ...

It offers a free service where it scans your computer for vulnerabilities, the sort that allows crackers to gain access to your computer when you are online. Just try the ShieldsUp! test, and the PortScan and it will report to you any potential problems, and give you suggestions on how to fix the holes. The site also contains a number of other interesting bits of software, such as the anti-spyware ... ...home, telling the company who sells/designs it how you are using the software. Obviously this can take on sinister connotations. Optout scans your computer for any evidence of spyware, and lets you remove any it finds. There are also a number of related newsgroups to help with security issues. Overall this is highly recommended for anyone accessing the Internet using Windows. Better to act now and prevent any loss of data. ...

This site is a must for anyone who is security minded, I discovered that my port 139 was open despite the fact that I was using BlackIce defender. I discovered a better firewall program called Zonealarm which it tells you about, and is available from www.zonelabs.com.
Netbios session attempts monitored by Zonealarm are very frequent, and had I not discovered www.grc.com I may not have been so well informed.
The optout program is highly recommended ...
