I use half.com often. I have about 50 books listed there now, all from my overflowing library. If I try to sell these books at a yard sale I'd be lucky to make a tiny amount. At half.com I earn half or less of the cover price. This helps me clear my shelves for new books.
Why don't I donate the books? I have donated hundreds of books to the local thrift shop. They now have so many they don't want any more until they have more room.
Why don't I give these books to my friends? They have their own stacks. We do trade sometimes, but we have different tastes, especially in fiction.
Why don't I sell these books on an auction site? I have tried, even starting out as low as $1.00. I have to pay a fee to the auction company even when I don't sell.
Half.com solves all my problems. I get to clear out books I no longer will read. I don't have to pay an upfront money to sell them. All I have to do is wait for someone to make an offer, accept the offer, and mail out the books. Half.com sends me my money on a monthly basis. It is a very good program.
Who benefits? People like me who have popular, commercial fiction books which are NOT collectible, but are still good reading. The money isn't huge, but it supplements my income. I feel I am sharing books instead of putting them out to be disposed of. As a book lover I hate to see a book destroyed, especially when it is in good condition.
I also buy books from half.com and am very happy with my purchases. I have saved dollars off the price of new books and yet many of my purchases have been like new books in terrific condition.
I am very pleased with this service. The customer service response is quick. The customer service people are very friendly and helpful.
