Hotmail is a web based email system which allows you to acess your email from any computer. I've had a hotmail acconut for a while now and apart from the odd times when MSN are updating I've no problems with it.
To sign up for a hotmail account just go to the MSN home page and click onto the hotmail icon, this will then take you to the hotmail signing up pages, this took an age mainly due to the fact that you'll find that your choosen name has already been taken! Even odd names are gone - I had a play around to see!Once you've got your hotmail account I'd defienetly suggested you download the MSN messenger - as this is an easy way to check if you've actually got any mail without going back to the MSN homepage. Once MSN messenger is down loaded you'll get a little icon on your browswer bar which you then click onto and then log into your hotmail account. If you have got mail a little box will flash up by clicking onto this you then go straight to your account. If you keep the MSN messenger on whilest online when new mail comes into your inbox you'll be told by abnother little box flashing up on screen and it also tells you who actually sent the email.
Using Hotmail is relatively easy you have the ability to send normal emails or the more eye pleasing rich text emails complete with colour, font and smiley icons. You can also do the usually attachments, pasting and inserting pics into an email. All attachments are automatically scanned for viruses.Spam n porn, unfortunately if you have a hotmail account you are going to get these! Especially if you sign up and have a first name as your account name. Hotmail has set up a bulk mail system where spam etc is sent. To use this just click on the bulk mail icon and this will be automatically set up for you. This is not 100% fool proof I still get porn and spam in my inbox and also have had non bulk mail put in my bulk mail folder - so do check it regularly! You also have the ability to block senders, so that you do not recieve any more porn or spam from those senders.
I would defientely recommend a hotmail account to anyone especially if your going to sign up for any paid email schemes

On my old account I was getting at least 70 e-mails or porn and offers of graduation certificates a day :P
