I only joined the vast community that is the sacred net. No longer the home of geeks and hermits, the WWW. world is welcome to anyone with a phone line and to be honest deep pockets (the company pays for ours, much to their annoyance). But prices are falling.
But like the title, this isn’t about the net itself. I’d be here for ages otherwise!
Nope. This is an op about MSN Hotmail.com. When I got the net a few months ago, I did the obvious thing and get my E-Mail address assigned and for me to E-Mail other people. My brother is on hotmail and he recommended it, so I duly signed up my name and here is an op describing the ins and outs of the most popular E-Mail sites in the world…
WHAT DOES HOTMAIL DO?
Licensed my MSN, the hotmail site is a way to send E-Mails the most simplest and quickest way around the world and back
again to your recipient. The processes are designed to be easy to follow and good fun to use. There are many E-Mail sites around but this is the best to me after trying a few out.
SIGNING UP
Inevitably, you have to sign up first. This is the most important process of the whole E-Mail experience because it determines your address and use of the site. Although it looks daunting at first with lots of questions, just read it through thoroughly and you’ll find all the questions are very easy to understand. For instance when it says ‘Name’, you put your name (I should get a job on playdays). This goes on for a couple of pages. However, I do recommend that you don’t answer the questions you don’t need to answer because they do not need to know your phone number or your likes and dislikes. Apart from that just type in the answers and your away, but…
THE USERNAME AND PASSWORD
…You’ll have to encounter an irritating stumbling block. Your username is your E-Mail address and this is extremely annoying to get the right name. I prefer to be called Ollie but that was taken, as was Solex (my Ciao name) and as was Bodie (my dooyoo name). So I had to settle with my normal name and surname. How boring!
WRITING E-MAILS
This has to be very easy for all you Ciao members because it isn’t too dissimilar to what you do on Ciao. At the top of your site you’ll have Inbox, compose and address book. If you want to write an E-Mail than click on compose and you’ll have a bar at the top for the E-Mail address. Ignore the following lines but do write in a small title for your message as that will appear on the inbox of the recipient. Then just type away with your ‘Hey’ messages, or you’re ‘sorry’ messages or even some ‘saucy’ mailing! Write whatever you want because…
SECURITY
…All your messages will be very secure. Once they have been sent you can’t see them again and they’ve gone straight to the right person –that is unless you’ve written the wrong address then you may be really having problems!
LOGGING IN
MSN have enhanced security here by making you write in your username (or E-Mail address) and your password each time you want to access the site and the computer will not remember the password like it usually does.
RECEIVING MAIL
This is the simplest process of them all because when you’ve accessed the site, you can simply glance to your little information pad on the left and it’ll say if you have any new mail. If you don’t want the mail just delete it without any fuss. Although I haven’t done this there is also a feature where a little icon will come up on the screen saying if you’ve received any mail so you don’t forget.
ADDRESS BOOK
Cant be bothered to keep writing out all those addresses, then just save them into your address book and just click on their name when you want to send them mail. Simple. It works just like a phone.
HOW FAST IS IT?
This is the primary advantage point of the hotmail site. It does what it says. It is hot. If you send an E-Mail to another hotmail user it’ll get there in second rather than minutes and it’ll tell you when it’s there. If they aren’t hotmail users you’ll have to wait a little longer but not much longer. And if the E-Mail is delayed in some way, it’ll tell you in an E-Mail sent to you by MSN.
OVERALL
Hotmail is a very effective site. It’s quick and easy to understand and that is why I am a ver happy user. Whats the point in slow snail mail when your messages can be sent in a few seconds?
Thanks for reading…

Great service and brilliant op! One warning though (and this is NOT a problem of hotmail as such, but true for all mail providers): It is very important to NOT publish your e-mail address in the hotmail directory (there's a box to be ticked/unticked during application) as you may otherwise be flooded with all sorts of advertising but also extremely explicit porn-mails of the worst kind... This is especially important when setting up a mail account for one's children.

You did well getting your own name on hotmail, I used two underrscores in mine, much better than adding a number that noone can remember! Helen
Advantages: Good selection of features, and even advanced users are catered for Disadvantages: Limitations on attachment size and account size. Also difficult to get a meaningful username
