Hotmail is a site all about communication. Its main feature is a free e-mail account available to anyone on the internet.

**Layout & Design**

The main page is kept very simple. It is divided into town halves. The left hand side is dark blue. At the top, there is the MSN logo, of a colourful butterfly. Next to this, it says 'Hotmail' in white print. Below this, there is a brief description of what the site allows you to do.

'Now MSN hotmail gives you what you've been asking for. more Storage space, large attachments that get delivered, and guaranteed access to your account no matter how often you sign in.' You are given a link to the Sign up Form, but I'll talk about that in more depth later.

Below this, there are a few more links, to further information about virus protection, languages, FAQs (frequently asked questions) and languages. At the very bottom, there is some information about msn Broadband, one of the many features of hotmail.

On the left hand side, the background is white. There are two boxes in order for current members to enter their screen name and password. There are under a small heading 'Already have a hotmail account?' Above this, there is a link to create a new hotmail account.

The first time I created a new hotmail account, I found this link quite hard to find. I haven't got bad eyesight or anything, but it was the same size as most of the other links, so I found myself having to scan the whole page before I eventually found what I was looking for. I was then ready to create my new e-mail account, so I clicked on the 'Sign Up' link.

**Why Sign Up?**

There are many different reasons for creating a hotmail account.

- To categorise your e-mails. By this, I mean to create a new account for, for example family and friends, as well as having a server or company e-mail address for work and business e-mails. I have many set up to take overspilling Junk mail, if I want to sign up to a web site, but don't want to risk having excess unwanted junk mail sent to my main account.

-You can access hotmail from almost any computer, simply by going on to the web page and logging in.

-The e-mail address is permanent- it won't be deleted if you change server or computer, leave school, move house or even change jobs! The only way your hotmail account can be deleted is if you don't log on for 30 days.
Unfortunately, this meant that when my friend went on holiday to South America for longer than 30 days, her account was deleted.

-It takes less than a minute to sign on to hotmail! However, that isn't including the time it takes for you to log on to the internet.
-Your e-mail is secure and private. The only way that anyone can log on to your account is if they enter the password you have selected. Hotmail emphasises that if your computer has a problem, all the data on your account is stored securely at a central location, so no information will be lost or deleted.

**Ease of Signing up**

So if you decide that yes, you want to sign up to hotmail, you have to now create an account.

There two categories in which you must enter information. "Personal" and "Account".

For the Personal information category, you are asked to enter a bit about yourself- your name, date of birth, gender, occupation and location. You don't have to fill in all the fields, but hotmail once again emphasises the security of your personal information, and promises that your details will not be sold to any third parties.
Your name is required, as it will appear on all outgoing e-mails.
The second category is 'Account Information'. This is the fun part! You must firstly create a screen name. You can use letters, numbers and underscores, but no special characters like exclamation marks, question marks, etc., or spaces. You can choose any word you want, or a combination of words and numbers, in fact it's completely up to you! But bear in mind that it's very hard to be original, as hotmail as millions of members. You may have to try many times before getting a screen name you are happy with! Hotmail offers a service where you can enter a few words, and it will create one for you, but these screen names are often complicated, involving lots of numbers. I think that the best e-mail addresses are easy to remember, which is why the hotmail domain is ideal. It is a lot easier to remember than many specific servers.

When you have chosen your new E-mail address, you then have to select a password. Try not to make it too obvious, or too short, and it’s always a good idea to include numbers. All of these tips make your password much harder to decipher!

In case you forget your password, it’s important to have some backup, so you can still access your account. This is why you are asked to choose a secret question. You are given several options- Anniversary, favourite sports team, favourite pet’s name, spouse’s middle name, etc. All of these are the sort of questions that not many people besides yourself know the answer to. You then type the secret answer below that.

The next stage is checking boxes. There are two that are automatically checked. Hotmail member directory, and Internet white pages. These boxes should be checked if you want to be listed in internet directories. An Internet directory is where hotmail members can look you up, and send you messages! Your name and location only will be listed. Your E-mail address will only be dispatched if you reply to a message from another hotmail member.

You are almost ready to submit your application form, but first, there is a box of terms & conditions to read. It might seem like a chore, but it is a good idea to at least scan through them, to familiarise yourself with the ‘rules’ of hotmail. Click on ‘I Agree’ (only if you agree, obviously!) to submit your account details, and you have now successfully created a hotmail account!

**Other Features**
Hotmail is home to a wide variety of different features. First of all, there are features of your account itself-

You can...
Compose and receive e-mails.
Divert junk mail into a seperate Junk Mail folder to prevent it reaching your account.
Clearly see the ammount of storage space you have available
Create an address book to save you entering full e-mail addresses
Block e-mail addresses

A number of features are listed at the top of your account page..
You can search the web- just like any other search engine (google, yahoo, etc.).
You can shop over the internet- links to some common internet stores (bol.com, amazon, Tesco) as well as separate categories which links to even more internet companies.
Money- there’s a whole hotmail page all about money! Investing, stocks & shares, online banks, etc.!
People & chat- chat rooms for a wide variety of different topics, ranging from Teens to Gardening!
Profile- You can create a profile that other hotmail members can view, containing a bit about yourself and even a photograph!
There are many other features on hotmail, but I’ll let you explore them for yourself, as really, there are too many to name!
There is one final feature I will mention, and that is the MSN messenger, which allows hotmail members to download am Instant Messenger service, and talk to fellow members! It is very straight forward to download and use. Your user name and font can be personalised, and there are a number of fun ways to send pictures, photos, etc. I won’t go into great detail about this, as there is a specific category on ciao about it, but if you are keen to download one, then have a read of some of the opinions on it!

*Disadvantages?*

As hotmail is used by such a wide variety of people, it is very hard to please everyone. Personally, I think that the web page designers have done a fantastic job! Although the layout is a little plain, it is easy to find your way around, which is important in a page’s design.

Unfortunately, Mac users like myself cannot make full use of all the features, due to system requirements. But we have been taken into consideration, and the site is constantly improving to make even more areas of it accessible to even more people, and there is a special MSN Messenger available for Mac users.

***

I think that hotmail has to be one of my favourite sites, for all the reasons I’ve listed above, and is definitely worth a look!
