HSX is without a doubt a great way to spend your time on the internet if you are interested in the cinema. The basic idea is that you are given $2 Million Hollywood Dollars (not USD unfurtunately - but you can't have everything, can you?) to invest in Films, Acotrs and Actresses and the like. The great thing about the site is that before long you are learning more and more about the cinema in general because you are researching to find out which shares are going to go up and which are going to plummet. Another stock exchange simulation? Well, yes, but this is slightly different. Basically the Hollywood Stock Exchange gives you the chance to invest money (calm down - its only imaginary money) in movies. When you register (this only takes a couple of minutes) you are given $2 million Hollywood dollars. Using this money you can buy shares in movies, stars or options. Stock prices on movies are based on the estimated box office of a film in its first 3 weeks of opening (ie: $10 means it is estimated to take $10 million). HSX is great. It's basically the stock market for music and films and the goal is to make as much money as you can buy buying and selling the right stocks at the right time. The price of the shares rise and fall depending on rumours regarding the film and its actual box office takings once it has launched. The main problem with HSX is its complexity. A friend sent me the URL for hsx.com about a year ago, at first I was a bit dubious, basically it sounded a bit naff, that soon changed though when I clicked the link and landed on their homepage. Imagine, being able to buy shares (virtually) in some of the biggest films around, thats the general idea of this site. You buy virtual shares , bonds etc, in upcoming movies, my current choices are "First wives clubs 2" , "Independance day 2001" and "Star Wars- episode 2", then you track to see how well you have done ,and if real successful you could win one of many prizes. My friend introduced me to the Hollywood Stock Exchange only last week. The idea is simple - buy and sell stocks and shares in films, film stars and musicians. You are provided with $2 million to start you off, plus some free shares. I correctly chose some shares in Angelina Jolie - these free shares have made me $12,000 richer! (although I have lost a fair amount on Leo Dicaprio!) I still havent worked out much beyond the basics, though - as well as buying and selling, you can "short" which means that if shares fall in price, you make a profit on that loss.
