UPDATE (28/09/04):
I recently received my third cheque, for £6.40. Admitedly it's only £19 I've earned in about three years, so don't expect to make money fast. It is, however, still paying and for not much effort.
UPDATE (01/01/07):
Since I originally wrote this, payment rates have been reduced ... more
If you're like me, you love any way of getting freebies or money off the internet in your spare time for not much effort. I was never in early enough for paid-to-surf schemes, and in my experience GPTREM (get paid to read email) programmes have never been worth it either. Click a link for $0.005. If you're exceptionally lucky, they may carry on sending emails long enough for you to be able to cash out (in, like, 5 years!) so then you just have to wonder whether they're a scam... Since I don't have a network of 200 referrals either, I found MyPoints points mails the only ones that ever paid. Until now.
HTMail (presumably cleverly named to catch people that mistype Hotmail) really is different. It's the only one that's ever paid me for a start!
I can't remember how I came across HTMail, but essentially it seems like other GPTREM schemes. Of course, they claim to be first and best:
"** History, Payment and Profit ** Many of our list members will not be aware that HTMail has been in business since April 1997. We were actually the *first* paid email service, and most of the rest have been based on our original model. We have always opted for organic growth, without outside investment. This has perhaps limited our growth rate, and maybe two years ago looked like a mistake - but today it appears to have been prudent! HTMail has always taken the prudent route. We have kept our staff numbers at minimum (so we are not currently intending to make any lay offs, unlike seemingly everyone else) and we have been profitable since 1998. We have no borrowings at all, and no demanding Venture Capitalists, so we can make our own decisions. Most importantly for our list members, we keep a bank balance available that will allow us to pay the full amount that we owe to all of our lists members at any time - so if every single person on the list asked for their money tomorrow - we could pay, without needing to borrow any cash. Maybe we are 'over careful' - but don't your earnings feel safer?"
but I don't really know if that's true.
I'll mention orders later, but for now membership:
What's so good about HTMail? Well, for a start they pay up to 15p a read! How does this work?
You join up like normal in these schemes - you have to select various questions that allow them to screen lists for advertisers. Obviously some responses will affect your earnings (because of how often you get mail), but don't lie - they recently sent a warning they'd caught people cheating and would be booting them. Once you've confirmed your membership, just wait for the emails.
It took me about 15 months to earn my first cheque, £7.22. That represents 47 emails, which is under one a week. I noticed sometimes you may go a few weeks without email, then get two or three in close succession. It depends partly on how your demographics fit obviously; but apparently they have a complex system that prioritises those who have had least mailings and/or been waiting the longest, so it's quite fair.
The emails you get have an advertiser's message, a link to their website and several other links. What's so unusual about HTMail is you're not paid just to visit the site then leave (like normal). Instead a pop up (very brief) questionnaire accompanies your visit. It really is quick - a couple of drop down boxes rating presentation, content and your interest; what did you like best/worst, if you didn't purchase/sign-up why not; general comments and occasionally one extra question. You don't even HAVE to answer all these. I feel you should try some because it's part of how they make their money to pay us; but I often just do the drop down boxes and the last two questions (though if there is an extra question specific to that advert I always answer it).
If you don't want the hassle of this, you can click on a link to show you've read the email, and you'll still get paid something without even visiting. This is where it actually gets a bit complicated. I said you get paid up to 15p an email, but in fact they introduced two membership classes a while ago - personal or referrer. You can choose which when you join and change which you are any time (up to once a month). Pay rates are as follows:
"Personal Class: For every HTMail email ad that you return our code number from we will credit you US $0.08 (or UK £0.05), and for each advertised web site that you visit and return our feedback form from, we will credit you an additional US $0.16 (or UK £0.10).
Referring Class: You are credited US $0.02 (UK £0.01), for every HTMail email that you return our code number from and an additional US $0.10 (or UK £0.07) if you return our feedback form on visiting an advertisers web site - but you also get US $0.03 (UK £0.02) for each feedback form returned by someone you referred AND an additional US $0.01 (UK £0.01) for each feedback form returned by THEIR referrals."
In either case, your earnings are kept in your account. Every quarter (on 15th of March, June, September and December) they pay out cheques to everyone with at least $10/£5 (You can request payment with less, subject to charge; you can also request a higher minimum if subject to bank conversion charges). Any money not paid is carried over - I think indefinitely (remember it took me 15 months for my first cheque). I've now had my second cheque (another £5.22) and had a few mailings towards the next - though I admit it's been slow lately.
Advertisers. They've just been offering advertising for $9.95 per 100 on orders of under 2000 names (or just $5.95 per 100 on orders of 2000 names or more) with no minimum order. Special offers are always changing so check the site for details. Members get advertising discounts and can use cash in the account as part payment (only part I think). It may seem more expensive than some schemes, but their advantages are: - Guaranteed 10% visit rate (current average 32%) - Feedback on your site - you get to add one specific question free
I hope I've explained everything adequately. If not, the site FAQ are pretty clear, but feel free to ask questions. The only other think is they have recently sent out an email about problems with spam filters - to make sure you're getting emails through you should enable mail from the htmail.com and htmail-email.com domains and allow pop-ups.

Since I originally wrote this, payment rates have been reduced and the minimum payout amount has risen to £15. However they are still sending emails and paying out - I received my latest cheque for £19 just last month - so still top paid to read email scheme for me.
Advantages: Free rewards, You help advertizers Disadvantages: Low payout
HT Mail Limited is another web rewards site. However this one is a bit different than the others in the way that you earn your benefits.
HT Mail started on the 1st June 1997 and is a U.K. based company operating from Somerset, England.
It is apparent that this company has tried to target the American market and all transactions, wether rewards or purchases, are quoted in both currencies ie. Pounds and Dollars.
This is one of the few companies, ... ...and are targeting and doing well in the American market. Usually it’s the other way around as most of us know.

Advantages: Pays in pounds. E-mails are fairly frequent Disadvantages: They may be periods when you do not receive any
I have signed up with countless paid e-mail programmes recencently in an effort to get some extra pennies. HTmail is definatly at the top of my list.
The first reason is they pay you in Pounds. As I am sure you will know; you are never going to get rich with these schemes, but it is nice to know you are building little cash amounts up with these companies. The majority of these are based in the US and pay in dollars which is fine with me, but the ... ...in reality, could have taken you several months of e-mail reading to build up). So to find a programme that pays in pounds is great.
I have been with them several months, and the e-mails are coming !!
If you visit the site, you may agree with me that they appear to be very proffesional in comparison to some of the others you may have joined.
It is very easy to sign up with them and they do have a referral scheme.
I have to say I have not been ...

Advantages: easy to do, 5 e-mails in 5 days, good money Disadvantages: sometimes hard to find the link
I recently decided to sign up to a load of these pays you to read e-mail things after reading lots of opinions on 'ciao'. Htmail was the only one that was actually recommended rather than all the others which people only had bad things to say about! Therefore I thought this one might be worth it, so I joined up. This is very simple and requires you to fill in stuff about your interests, contact details and work habits etc, then I waited for the e-mails ... ...surprised, i expected to wait ages but the very next day I received an e-mail and I have had one every day since then, a total of 5 so far. Ok ok I know thats not a lot but I've made 25p so far (5p per e-mail) and if they keep coming at this rate then I should earn some money from it!
Basically it is a UK scheme that sends you e-mails which you are paid to read, obviously they get paid by the advertisers. They pay you 5p per e-mail that you read, ...

Advantages: Better pay-rates, pay in POUNDS, more proffessional than the others Disadvantages: not enough emails
Yes I know what you must be thinking, “Is there actually a paid-for-email program I have not signed for”, well to tell you the truth, there are lots I have not signed for, but never mind, I’ll soon have them all.
Anyway, lets get on to the latest of my “paid-for-Email” opinions; the program is “HTMail”. I have been a member of “HTMail“ for several months now, and despite only receiving about ... ...of the others, the reason being, “HTMail” is a bit different than the usual ones, which enables them to pay you more for each Email you receive.
What is HTMail?
Like lots of these programs, well all of them actually, you sign-up which is a very easy process, in which you give your details and interests, and that’s it, but the difference with this program is the payments and what you have to do. Unlike other “Paid-for-Emails” ...

Htmail is a site which will either benefit you as the owner of a website or benefit the rest of us as the owners of an email address. Yes, its yet another paid email scheme but one which actually might be worth signing up for this time. We all know what these email schemes are about.you sign up with them and they send you emails from advertisers. Each time you read one, and prove you have done so(well at least clicked the link) they pay you a pittance ... ...have enough money in your account to meet the minimum cash out level. Well that is how most of these sites work. This one is a little different - but you have to do a little more work for your money. When Htmail sends you an email you click a linkto visit the advertisers site as usual and get paid for doing so. You will also get a pop-up form for giving feedback on the advertisers site - filling this in will gain you more money. But the really big ...
