I River is an American company selling portable audio equipment (mp3 player, cd players…). I discovered them by chance a couple of months ago. It was in Switzerland. My girlfriend was looking for a mp3 player, and the seller advised us the brand Iriver, apparently the best on the market. At the time, it was a 256MB mp3 player, with radio and voice recorder included. The little thing looked weird to be honest (like a mini electric shaver) and its price was around £150.
After more research for this mp3 player on the net, we came to the conclusion that for this memory storage, this Iriver was the best. I then went on their website in America to check the prices there. I discovered their latest mp3 player, the IHP-120 which is actually a hard drive (20GB), with radio and voice recorder for about £250.
That’s where it all began. Some little stars appeared in my eyes and I then thought, “I want one”. My girlfriend got jealous, and she got one as well.
Their latest now is the IHP140 which is a 40GB hard drive mp3 player. It has the same options, but the hard drive has a bigger capacity. I will then review the IHP120, just to make you jealous (I’m loving it… what a bastard I am hu hu hu).

Now, let’s move on to MY actual review about the IHP120, because I am the star here. Not them.
APPEARANCE / LOOK ************************* Well. It isn’t the nicest looking piece of technology, but who cares? You bought it to listen to music, not to attach it next to your paintings on the wall, did you? It has the same size as a pat of butter, but thinner (comical comment: “I can’t believe it is not butter” Ha ha ha). For the people who think it is big, well, it is still smaller than a CD player, and it can contains the equivalent of thousands of CDs, and smaller than the Ipod. The size is approximately (in mm): 60(W)x19(D)x105(H). Its weight is approximately 160g. It fits perfectly in a pocket, and is very discreet.
The main unit has a big screen (not a coloured one), which is very clear. Below that there is a “tit” used for changing volume, track, and entering the menus. One the side you have the play, stop, and record buttons. You also have all the microphones, line in and out, and remote control plugs.
The remote control has all these buttons as well, and is as big as a lighter (not a zippo, just a basic lighter). It has a display screen, so you can see all what is displayed on the main unit’s screen. It also has a clip on its back to clip it to your T-shirt, jacket, left breast tit (whatever you are into).
HARDWARE *****************
The mp3 player comes with its accessories: Leather case USB cable (USB 2.0 supported: faster loading of the data onto your player, however, most of the PCs have USB1, it works fine as well, but is a bit slower) Remote control: you attach it to your jacket or wherever, and you can control the whole thing from there without touching the main unit. Earphones and foam covers (x4) Earphones extension cable External microphone AC adapter Line in/out connection cable Installation CD
That’s a lot of stuff for the little price (see the part "price"). All the cable plugs are gold plated for a better sound quality. If you still have no idea what the thing looks like, check the picture attached.
WHAT DOES IT DO? **********************
MP3 PLAYER: Right. That’s the main bit. You can play mp3, WAV, WMA, ASF files. This can be updated. The last update of the player allows to support and playback 32kbps - 500kbps based Ogg Vorbis files, providing an even better sound quality than MP3 or WMA based files. With 20GB of internal memory, you can store around 50,000 mp3 (considering a mp3 is around 2.5MB for a 3-4 minutes song), and around 100,000 WMA files. You have then plenty of space. You can load and unload your mp3 player from or to a PC.
FM RADIO: You have an internal FM radio, you can save up to 20 stations.
VOICE RECORDER. This is quite clear I think…
RECORDER: You can record stuff from: the radio, any external appliance (HI FI, CD player…), and also with the external microphone, you can record your voice, a gig, whatever. The player will save what you record as mp3 or wav (it is up to you), and you can set the record quality (bitrate)
MEMORY STICK: That’s the cool bit. You can save ANY file to your player: videos, pictures, WORD files, EXCEL files… Of course you can’t use them or open them from your player, it is just like a floppy disk, so you'll need to download it to the new computer to work with these files..
SOUND QUALITY ******************** The sound quality depends completely of the quality of your mp3 file. However, the earphones provided are very cool. Great sound. You also can play with the equalizer, or use the factory settings (rock, classic, jazz…). You can record mp3 from your HiFi, and you can choose the quality of the recording (bitrate type). Bit rate: 32Kbps~320kbps.
cheap advice: Don’t listen to it too loud it is bad for your little ears… Or huge ears (Prince Charles, if you are reading…)
EASE OF USE **************** This is my first contact with the world of mp3 players. The manual is very clear, and so far I managed to do everything with it. I just need practice. Basically, if you can use a CD player or a HI FI, you can do it. If your last HI FI was just a HIFI with vinyl and these strange looking things called tapes, then you can forget about it.
The player is very pleasant to use.
Another cool thing about the player is that you don’t need to install any program to allow it to work on your computer. If you have windows 2000, XP, ME, your PC will recognise it as an attached device. Then you can copy and paste the files. If your machine works on previous versions, don’t panic, you just have to install a small program. Before saving your files to your player, organise them in folders, and they will appear as it is on your player. Then you can “tidy” your folders by genre, artist, album… It is very clear, really.
SPEED OF LOADING *********************** I just transferred 648 files on it. Most of it was mp3, some of it videos. It took about 45 minutes. My PC has a USB 1.0. The Iriver IHP120 can run on USB 2.0, which is faster.
BATTERY LIFE **************** The IHP 120 comes with an internal battery. It takes about 3 hours to charge it fully, and 16 hours to discharge it (playback time). This is brilliant, knowing that the Ipod can last about 8 hours. The good thing is that you don’t need a PC to recharge your mp3 player… A lot of players recharge on the USB port of computers… However, while transfering data, the battery goes down quicker, but you can always plug it to recharge it at the same time...
Advice: always wait for the batteries to be fully discharged before recharging it; it will allow it to keep its long life...
PRICE ******** He he he. Now that you all want it, you are probably thinking that it costs a fortune… My answer is: NO! I bought this player from Amazon.co.uk, and paid £244.99 P&P. I checked on other websites, but it was more expensive everywhere else (about £300). This means that this player is £50 cheaper than the Ipod.
WHERE CAN I GET IT? ************************** Amazon.co.uk seems to be the best deal. I’ve never seen any Iriver in high street shops. But I think they begin to arrive in English shops. You can also get it from www.iriver.com, it would be even cheaper according to today’s exchange rate (£1=$1.80): it would come up to £222.21. However, you might have to add taxes at reception, but I'm not sure about that.
CUSTOMER SERVICE **************************** I can't remember why I contacted Iriver, but I did send them an email. I think it was about updating the software... They replied the following day, and they were very clear. It was all sorted.
MY OPINION ************** Well. This thing is brilliant. It works well, sounds great, has a lot of options and uses. So now you are all jealous, I can tell you to buy it. This mp3 player is very easy to use, you can transfer data from any PC, as you don’t need to install a program to run it (except if you have windows 98 or previous versions). I think this is just great, and compared to the Ipod, I think this is better value for money. I have been using it for 4-5 months now, and I never had a problem. I learnt to use it, and it is very very easy. If you want to check what the Ipod does, I would recommend to read the review ElizaF wrote.
THE IHP 120 DOES ********************** Almost everything you expect from a mp3 player, even more.
THE IHP 120 DOESN’T ************************** Wash the dishes, tidy your room, scratch your back or prepare coffee.
You are welcome. Please don’t forget to rate this op! Thanks!
Advantages: High capacity, Excellent sound quality, Easy menu navigation. Disadvantages: No on-the-go playlists.
...BUILD
First off, the IRiver HP-120 is about 6cm wide, 3cm deep, and 12cm long, without the carry case. This is slightly larger than Apple's iPod, but I have never had any problems with fitting it into a pocket. The unit is very stylish, and feels very well made. The buttons are solid and the screen is large, which after 3 months of use, remains scratch-free (this is due to the superb padded leather carry case, which is a style icon in itself.)
... ...to suit that mood. The Iriver HP-120 doesn't, so I have to keep flicking through folders to find each song. A small gripe. Luckily, the HP-120 allows firmware (Operating system) upgrades, so if Iriver did want to update the unit to support on-the-go playlists, it would simply be a case of linking the unit to the PC and clicking "firmware upgrade". Fingers crossed. Overall, this is the best personal multifunction jukebox on the market. It is easy ...

Advantages: Practically anything is possible! (as far as recording/playing music is concerned) Disadvantages: Some may find the H120 hard to use
...where Apple falls behind iRiver - It is easy to believe that Apple's machine is more fun, as it has so many accessories available for purchase - what one realises in buying the iRiver is that equivalents of most of the accessories available for the iPod are *already included* with the iRiver H120, thus increasing the already significant price margin between the iPod and the iRiver:
I bought my H120 for £199. An equivalent iPod with 20 gigs of HD ... ...that I emailed to the iRiver support staff. I am still awaiting a reply.
Another potential downside to the player is its connectivity with the PC. It has a USB connection (1.1/2.0) but unfortunately there is no software included. However, the lack of software can be a blessing - it means that transfer to the device is as easy as finding the file, right clicking and choosing 'Send to.. -> iRiver (Drive [x]:)'
Other than these small quibbles, I am ...

Advantages: Sleek metal body, superb sound quality, a wealth of recording and playback options, simple drag-and-drop interface and lots more too many to list here. Disadvantages: Nothing whatsoever
Move over Apple, the iRiver is the 'must-have' MP3 player now! Here are the main points why.
1) Build quality, The iRiver is constructed of solid magnesium with polished chrome ends. The iPod is delicate white plastic with a thin silver veneer that scratches easily.
2) Simple drag-and-drop. To load songs onto the iriver, simply drag-and-drop to the iRiver's hard drive in My Computer. To load songs onto the iPod, you must use the clunky iTunes software.
... ...thats it.
4) The iRiver has a host of recording options built in. It accepts sources from its digital optical input, line input and int/ext microphone, has manual or automatic level control and it can record to MP3 or WAV. The iPod requires a clumsy attachment for recording.
5) Battery life. The iRiver has a huge 16 hour battery life compared to the iPods measly 8 hours.
6) the iRiver has all the accessories included in the box. These include: ...

...a magazine review about the iRiver unit which featured more disk space and an FM radio. Oh, and it had an internal and external microphone along with the ability to record live and directly to the hard disk drive.
This just had to be the one to go for now.
I abandoned my ipod after listening to the sound quality of the iRiver unit.
I actually use the white earphones with the iRiver now as they are better quality ear phones.
You can load any file ... ...and download it to the iRiver for the latest updates and features, nice touch iRiver.
The iRiver website is wonderful to navigate and also gives great support and user groups.
The iRiver has digital input and output and can record in many sample rates which begs the question, why can't others do this. For the price you pay iRiver has really gone to town on features.
It even has an FM radio but, alas, it can't record from it. The reception is perfect ...

...that the IPOD has over IRIVER H120 is the familiar white styling that everyone loves (however as you can see the H120 is a pretty little thing as well).
Furthermore, you can just plug it into your computer and it appears as an external storage device. Just copy your music onto it and thats it!
You can also upgrade the firmware by downloading it from the website and putting it on your MP3 player.
The remote control has to be seen to be believed ... ...that the main display does as well as being capable of doing everything from it.
Another little feature that this has is that you can use it as a dictaphone as it has an internal mic as well as supplying an external one also.

I am not a rich man and do not usually buy expensive things but this was a must have and i didnt think twice about getting it.

Advantages: Loads of features, great backlit remote Disadvantages: Cluttered design and menu system, no on-the-go playlists
the icons and text is a bit small, however that means you can get more info at the same time.
The navigational pad in the middle is easy enough to use but is no iPod click-wheel, which makes going thru long lists a bit of a mission. The menu structure is a bit clumsy, but that seems to be characteristic of iRivers releases (refer to my review of the PMP-120 media player). Most buttons are soft keys which means that they change their functions according to what menu you are in, which can be useful but more often than not you?ll be straining your eyes trying to see the little icon on the screen that tells you what each button does.
A pleasant surprise is the excellent in-line remote control that comes bundled with the device. It includes a proper backlit display which is even harder to read, but still is a nice bonus. This remote is very ...

I have always been loyal to Apple. I have an iMac and an iBook. But when they bought out the iPod, it just screamed SCAM! OK, it's cute, but it's also tinny, it's overrated and it's too much of a fashion icon for me.
iRiver, on the other hand, is outstanding.
My iRiver has a 20gb hard drive. It only cost me £199 and they are even cheaper now, although this model seems to be hard to get hold of. They have upgraded it with the H10, which has a colour screen. The 20gb model is available for £189.99 from 'advancedmp3players.co.uk', which is an excellent site for all things MP3 related! They also sell ipods if you can't resist :-)
