I have always used Hotmail, for my web based e-mail but one thing has always annoyed me. The sheer volume of spam e-mails. Their spam filtering software is useless and recent reports about their terms of use led me to search for a viable alternative.

I came across IE Mail because of a link on the Beenz website which I am an infrequent visitor to, but seen as I got some free beenz I signed up. The interface is very clean, with a minimal of advertising and I have been using the service for about a week and haven't received one piece of spam.

The usual functions are available, so anyone who has used Hotmail or any other web based e-mail will be able to slot in very easily. The font size does seem to be a little on the small side, but this can be rectified by using your web browsers font settings.

One thing that I do like about IE Mail is that when you click a link in an e-mail, it opens the link in its own browser window, without putting a frame at the top. This really annoys me about Hotmail, as should you want to bookmark the link, you have to force the page out of frames, by right clicking and selecting open in new window.

The only downside I can find is that there isn't a spam blocker or a virus scanner for attachments, but then Hotmail has both, but neither are reliable.

It's also possible to customise the site by clicking on preferences and there is a feature to auto-reply to incoming e-mails, but such is the basic layout that I haven't bothered to change anything.

With so many free web based e-mail services out there, the choice becomes difficult. If you like a clean layout, 20Mb of space and don't need a spam filter then I haven't found better than IE-Mail. Have you?

I've given up using my Hotmail account for the sheer amount of rubbish which I find every time I sign in....I only use it for MSN messenger now. I might take a look at this site to see if it's a good alternative. Good op, cheers. Jonny.
