I registered with Jobsite over a year ago now, basically because I wanted to see what was out there in the big world of jobs. Working at the University is ok – but being a non-private sector area, I felt that if I was to get anywhere with my career I had to look further afield.
Jobsite is probably the first site I came across when selecting one to work with. Been a fussy old bugger I ... ...or feel happy with it within the first 5 minutes I move on. Other sites such as Step Stone and Monster were ok but lacked a lot of what I felt was simple, easy control compared to Jobsite.
Here’s the run down then now the personal info is done with!

You get a clickable map of the UK (as that is where I am anyway!) so you can instantly get to jobs in Scotland, Ireland, etc.
Been a fussy old bugger I try sites briefly and if I don’t get to grips or feel happy with it within the first 5 minutes I move on. Other sites such as Step Stone and Monster were ok but lacked a lot of what I felt was simple, easy control compared to Jobsite.
Here’s the run down then now the personal info is done with!
HOME PAGE
You get a clickable map of the UK (as that is where I am anyway!) so you can instantly get to jobs in Scotland, Ireland, etc.
There is a QUICK SEARCH that means you can look for jobs without any detailed stuff over the last so many days or weeks. You have the option to choose the latest jobs available. From this minimalist search (now there’s a good word!) you can move on to more advanced searches to refine what you are actually looking for. More of that in a bit!
The bulk of the page is split between Job Hunters (like me) and the Client Services (the employer). I am talking from a job hunter perspective, but briefly the Client Services allow employers to register and every candidate that matches their criteria will be passed on to them. If they are interested they will contact you. In addition, they of course can advertise positions with Jobsite, which you as the hunter will scan through.
The Job Hunters section allows you to search again through the jobs available, starting by selecting your industry. You can register with Jobsite from here as well, which is a painless process and easy to follow through.
Finally, at the bottom registered Job Hunters can log in to their personal Jobsite area (called Mygojobsite) in which personal and job information is held for the individual logging in. This includes CV and Covering Letters (or several of them), plus any of the jobs you have been looking for and any predefined and saved searches for e-mail issue.
Right near the top of the page is a large button with MYGOJOBSITE (only missing the H and you could make some very interesting anagrams from that!). That will prompt you for you email address and Jobsite password (as above)…
YOUR PERSONAL JOB STUFF
After logging in you are presented with your PERSONAL CAREER MANAGEMENT CENTRE (!). Ok – it’s a Web page with some details on tailored to your needs. Fancy title – but it does the job nicely.
Under this section you have:
SEARCH NOW which allows you to do an advanced search in your chosen sector(s) of an industry. For example, mine is Information Technology, so all I do is type in say Visual Basic in the UK in Exeter and send it off to search. You can also state words that must be included or excluded from the search. You also have the chance to widen or change the industry areas you have, so you could search in Public Sector looking for IT related posts.
In addition, you can set up search criteria to be saved and then any jobs that match that will be mailed to you. This is simply called JOBS BY EMAIL.
CV MANAGEMENT allows you to store personal information and brief information on desired salary, highest qualification, etc. The CV is typed by the individual and then pasted into the space provided. Mine needed editing again once I had done that! You can edit your CV anytime to make changes. You also have a Distribute and Hide option, so that you can display your CV for the world to see or hide it from everyone. This is useful if you want to stop receiving calls from agencies but don’t want to stop being a user of Jobsite.
COVERING LETTERS allows you to create, edit and delete more than one covering letter that will accompany your CV. This means that you can have several letters geared toward different types of employer or positions. Again – easy to use – either type in your letter or paste and copy a version.
GoJobsite WAP sets up mails to your WAP phone (if you have one of course) so you can get job mails via your phone wherever you are. I am not THAT sad.
INDUSTRY NEWS provides up to date news on your chosen industry sector that may prove useful.
CAREER ADVICE gives advice on writing your CV, questions to ask, how to cope at interviews, working abroad and changing careers (to name but a few options). Useful but common sense stuff mostly – but it is nice to have it on tap.
At the bottom of the page you have a list of applications you have applied for and some brief details about your Jobsite account. All account details can be changed at any point, so if you move and change email addresses you can nip in and change it there.
SEARCHES (ADVANCED)
Advanced search asks for general location ie. UK, France, Germany ,etc. (or ALL) You then enter your skills or preferred job title ie. Visual Basic or Web Designer Desired locations narrow the search to specific areas ie. Devon or Manchester You can select the type of job from ALL JOBS, PERMANENT or CONTRACT/TEMP The search can also look for jobs posted in the last X number of days (1 to 7) Finally additional filtering can ensure a decent return by checking to see if specific words are included OR exlcuded eg. Include ASP and exclude C++
The search returns results in a nicely laid out format showing Job Title (or job skill area), location, Salary (the good bit), the type of position (permanent, etc.) and when the job was posted onto Jobsite.
JOB DETAILS
To view a job in detail you click on the link provided. This will display job details of what the job entails, what is expected, etc. This all depends on what the employer has typed in. Some descriptions are better than others!
You have the opportunity to MAIL TO A FRIEND if you think the job is good for them…
Pressing APPLY NOW will automatically bring up a covering letter(s) and your CV. You then have the opportunity to change any extra bits – fine tune it as it were – before finally pressing the APPLY NOW button once more.
That’s it! If the client is interested they will contact you (or rather the agency will) as most of the jobs are through agencies.
MY EXPERIENCE?
I got a lot from this site. I had loads of calls from agencies and got to several interviews. Be aware you may get inundated with calls at times. It can be quite annoying after a bit. In the end I put a message at the top of my CV saying “PLEASE CONTACT ME BY MAIL IN THE FIRST INSTANCE” – just so I could stop the phone ringing!
The thing is that this is an easy to use site with plenty of jobs to look at and it changes everyday! Well worth registering with and well worth its’ weight in bytes as it is FREE to use. If you are looking for a job or career advancement, then this is a really good site to start off with.
Finally – to prove it all pays off even from getting interview experience from trying for jobs – I start my new job in October 2001 working for a company based in Manchester. I will be all over the UK (so watch out!) doing Business Objects stuff (techy bit) for lots of folks. It pays off in the end and I do think that Jobsite gave me a lot of information and bottle to go for stuff like this.
Advantages: Convenient, free to use and very comprehensive, allows you to put your CV on-line Disadvantages: None that I am aware of
I stumbled across Jobsite when I was looking to change my job some time ago. I started off by searching for jobs within my locality, and sending off my CV to those that appeared suitable. The site allows you to put in key words relevant to your required position, but also works by putting a town, city or region name in, and you can select to seek jobs which have been advertised in the last 1,2,3 or 7 days, the choice is yours.
POWERSEARCH
If this ... ...time to look through all of them, you can power search. This offers you a selection of choices including:
Location - i.e. UK or a choice of other European destinations including France, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Spain, or alternatively, you can select the 'whole world' which I haven't tried, but assume it covers more countries than those identified above. It also allows you to enter the relevant skills you possess, your desired location, whether ...

With the summer holidays, most students are looking for jobs. The competition is awfully high so you really need to look around to get a good job with good pay.

Advantages: Relevance, easy, well laid out, save CVs and covering letters, loads of jobs Disadvantages: Limited search criteria, mostly IT related jobs
This is one of the better job search websites that I have found. I was looking for a work placement as part of my university degree in European Business. This is site offer an extensive search feature that provided more relevant results for me than any other site. They also have a good email service where you can put in your criteria and they email you the relevant jobs that appear on their site.
However, the email thing is only limited to area ... ...broader job search. Apart from this, the website was excellent and you can even send your CV direct to potential employers through the agency listed. There is also a useful facility where you can save up to five covering letters and your CV.
The site was the best I found and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a job. The limitations, however, as with most job websites, is that they are more for IT and Internet related jobs. ...

Jobsite.co.uk is a relatively fast web site except when searching when there is a delay before the results come up. This site is well presented and easy to navigate. All positions are advertised within the last week so you don’t get the situation that the job went months ago like on fish4.
Services offered on this site include a job search facility in which you may save searches for future reference or the have ... ...either daily or weekly. Searches can be narrowed down according to area, job title and working arrangement (temporary/permanent).
You may personalise your site by registering for a jobsite user id once you have done this you may upload various CVs and Cover letters to enable you to apply for positions when you are searching, this makes life very simple a few clicks you have applied for the position.
Also once your CV is uploaded it is stored on ...

Advantages: Comprehensive and searchable Disadvantages: Where does it all go?
I have been registed with this website for a long time, I have completed my profile complete with CV and revelant details. The content requested here is no different to any other similar agency website.
I have then used this information to apply for entirely appropriate positions, but have never heard anything back whatsoever, not a single email, call or anything. Either the job market is unbelievably competitive, or something is not right.
Many third parties, other than Reed use this website to advertise vacancies. I don't know whether they are out of date quickly or I am doing something wrong.
I have had better leads with other sites such as Jobsite and Monster with speculative enquiries made to me direct.
With Reed.co.uk I feel that it is a big void of automated applications going nowhere. ...

Jobs arrive daily in your e-mail inbox without you having to go to the website and repeatedly make the same search by re-entering all the same information.
This site concentrates of employment opportunities in IT. So this would be of little or no use to anyone else. But if you need a job in IT this is one of the best online. Its main rival is Jobsite.co.uk and hey I use this one as well.
You can visit the site and perform searches for various permanent and contract positions both here and abroad.
One unique feature of JobServe I do like is you can narrow down you search by looking only at the most recent postings from the last 1,2,3,4 or 5 days. This very handy to identify real new opportunities from those older and possibly already filled.
