Advantages: Good looks and speedy opinion viewing. Disadvantages: Little content, no community as such and NO MONEY!?
How many people here can honestly say that they would still write for ciao if their was no money in it for them? No not you. You neither. Maybe you. Well I most probably wouldn't. Yes I know that isn't really in the community spirit, and I do enjoy my time spent at ciao. However, the extra little incentive makes me try that little bit harder.

You do not get paid for the reviews you write. This will have a significant impact on the popularity of the site. I recieved an email from an unknown source the other day advertising a new site, justrecommend.net. This is another site in the vain of dooyoo and ciao. However there is one crucial difference. You do not get paid for the reviews you write. This will have a significant impact on the popularity of the site. The fact that you have no incentive to write good reviews may lead to the majority of recommendations being "short and sweet" and also, fewer members in the community in the first place. Another contributing factor to this is that there is NO word limit. I have already seen reviews lasting no more than a few sentences. I'm afraid this may lead to the sites demise, shortly after its even begun.
However, after taking a look at the site, it is not all bad. The site is very attractive. The layout is easy to use and the search engine is quick and gives good results (not that there is much to give results on at the moment). There is also a chat feature, something that I think ciao could do with. For example, a place where people in circle of trusts could meet and talk. There is even a place where you can report "peers" if you think someone is abusing the site.
At the moment it only has the top ten best rated products on the homepage for you to click on and no actual "last review" or 20 review section. This would be a bad thing if the site became more popular and the community grew. Another missing feature is the ability to have a circle of trust. You can rate other peoples opinions in the same way as on ciao, however, if you trust all their opinions you are unable to do anything about this. Therefore you cannot find their new opinions unless you search through the whole site.
One advantage above ciao that I can see is the way you read reviews. Once clicked on, a little javascript pop up appears containing the review and relavent options such as how you will rate the review. This enables you to read the review, rate it and return to the page you were previously on in an easy and efficient manner. I find this way of looking at opinions much more intuitive (did I spell that right?). Try it for yourself.
Overall, this a very, very new site. I think I was one of the first few people to join and therefore there is very little content at the moment. The overall look and feel to the site is promising and it is quite a fast site, but as they say, "don't judge a book by its cover". The foundations are there but the one vital factor which will attract a larger consumer base isn't, money. What makes ciao such a great site is the thousands of other people all contributing giving a community spirit. I don't think this will happen here. Maybe on a small scale, but they have to change their fundamental marketing strategy if the site is to become popular.
P.S. I will update this op as the site grows. Maybe one day it will rival the likes of ciao and dooyoo!
Advantages: wider variation of marks on the marking scale. Disadvantages: very little content
The titlebar of justrecommend.net's website (hereafter referred to as jr.net) bears the legend "Exchange Independent Recommendations, Opinions, Advice, Reviews" which in a nutshell is a very similar service to that offered by ciao.com, dooyoo.com, epinions.com, mouthshut.com and until last week themestream.com.
I received an e-mail about jr.net in the e-mail account that I have listed as my e-mail address for Ciao UK, and it would appear that I ... ...sent a mail of this nature, following less than a month after mouthsh*t.com's mailshot to Ciao users.
It is true that big strong oak trees from acorns do grow, which is why I did not expect the site to be that jam-packed with recommendations. However, equally I did not expect the site to contain a mere 28 recommendations in its going out guide. It is normal for such a portal to invite a few people to at least flesh it out before it goes headlong ...

After reading a review on this site, I had to go to check this site out. My verdict is that Ciao you have nothing to worry about, this site is half dead. The quality is poor, the range of categories is small and all in all it’s a basic version of ciao. Of course, there’s one thing missing from the site, needed to improve it. Money. I’m sorry but I am going to be honest, money is an incentive and this site doesn’t pay you for ... ...Feel free to write away, but don’t expect do get paid. Hence the lack of action on this site. I like the discussion board on the site, and when I went to have a look at what was going on, there was one message posted and that was four days ago, it’s like one opinion on ciao. Unthinkable!!!! Well reality on this site. I liked the ‘focus’ they had for each week, but again there wasn’t many opinion to illuminate the section ...

I got a anonymous e-mail from this site, and normally I would just delete it from my inbox but this time I decided to have a look at the site. The site is similar to ciao, and although the layout is different the concept is the same. Write opinions on a whole range of topics so the site can give consumers advice on products. They have a discussion board on the site, where members can post messages which I thought was a good idea. I still haven’t ... ...should also be looking for. I did notice the category options to write on weren’t as extensive as ciao, but I did like the idea of having a ‘Focus’ for the week, it seemed good. The layout of the page was good but I was a bit surprised that they had so much space on the homepage----short of idea perhaps. However, this site does not pay it’s members to write opinions and I am afraid the quality of the opinions submitted are ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Do they SPAM e-mail Ciaoers?
I received an e-mail a couple of days back from the site justrecommend.co.uk, inviting me to join, even though I had never heard of them.
Further investigation found that the site is similar to Ciao, in that you recommend products that you like, and so do others. Where it differs from Ciao is in that they do not pay for your recommendations in any way, shape or form. I haven't joined simply because it offers nothing to me, but the following day ... ...a work colleague to Ciao, and when I mentioned that I had received this e-mail from justrecommends, was very surprised to find that she had received one on the very same day. Coincedence? I don't think so. While I expect spam in my Hotmail account, my friend uses BTInternet, so for us both to be spammed on the same day, at two different servers was stretching the imagination a little.
EXCEPT that one other thing links us. We both advertise our e-mail ...
