Background Lego was formed by a Dane, Ole Kirk Christiansen in the 1930's. The name stems from the Danish "leg godt" or play well. The theme of the company is that "learning and pay involves creativity and imagination." http://www.lego.com/eng/info/facts.asp
In the early days, Lego revolved around mostly moulded plastic brightly coloured interlocking blocks that could be assembled together by little fingers. Today, they still offer the same coloured blocks but have interspersed well with technology to include robotics, internet, tv/dvd and variations on the mouldings. They are a trans national corporation offering Lego Materials, Lego Licensing, Legoland Parks, Lego Interactive, Lego Education, Lego Learning Institute and Lego Serious Play.
The web site itself I found to be at best disappointingly functional at the front page. It contains a bland grey page with half a dozen links. If you can ignore the poor 'welcome' page you may go onto view the three main themes of such a site: Products, Play and Shop. The Products page I found quite irritating because it only delivered a range of their goods, and despite the search engine (which was good and fast) just seemed to duplicate the shop page, but without the prices.
The Shop page was a huge success with our younger viewers. Here they could view all the latest in Lego products by theme, picture or name etc. For the shopper, its important to note prices are in US$ and if you were considering a purchase is far more useful than the products page. Secure online shopping is avalable. The Play page I found equally confusing, promising much with films, theatre etc, but insisting on membership, passwords or on occasions the site simply wouldnt respond. Perhaps I just hit it at a busy moment, but I felt that this would confuse young viewers (and some older ones ahem).
For me the site was a definite let down. I expected a fantastic introductory front page with gaily coloured constructive toys of various simplicity or complexity. The last thing on earth I expected was a bland white page with a grey block ! With a bit of patience you can get to the core of the site though. I found the simplest way was to go through the site index which was excellent. A plain, straightforward worded index linking to all parts of the site which I found the easiest to navigate.
Here one could link to the real juicy fruits of this site. From Harry Potter to Star Wars fans "movies" or the educational software to downloading material, and details of the theme parks to name a few. One could spend hours whiling away the hours if you have time. The annual report can be downloaded from here too if you are an investor. If you are purely looking for a gift, then go to the shop page and select from there, the toy of your choice. Consider purchasing from a local retailer, however, since the site is rather pricey, and in US dollars.
In essence, the front page of the site is extremely poor, for a world quality product, otherwise the layout and design of the site are good. I went to the Site Index and Shop pages from where you can be truly entertained and informed. Once you have your key to the navigation of this site the visit can be enthralling, educational and informative. The site can be viewed in 3 languages; English, Dutch and Danish which I felt was lacking for a multi million earning corporation, in Spanish at the very least, but a minor detail. Otherwise it will hold special interest for gift buyers, educational administrators, special needs, nursery nurses, and strategic interests in government child development issues, the list could go on and on.

Sounds like a disappointment overall. I love the wonderful moving lego models they build, like cranes and robots.

I quite like their LegoLand theme park that made me feel young again! :)
