Advantages Advantages You don't get all the 'join my mafia/farm/other random crap' messages that you do with Facebook

Disadvantages Disadvantages You need to hunt to find some fun stuff amongst all the business stuff

LinkedIn is a site very much like Facebook but made for business. It’s a social networking site but the friends (or contacts as they are on LinkedIn) don’t tend to be the sort of people you’d tell about your drunken nights out and you certainly wouldn’t post any pictures on there of you pushing a cow over at 3am on a Saturday night! If I haven’t put you off so far, then read on to find out how to get involved. To start with, you need to register. This is a very quick process and involves you putting your details in, including an email address. LinkedIn will then send you a confirmation email ... more

    Advantages Advantages Easy contact management

Disadvantages Disadvantages Watch how large your contact list gets

So what is Linkedin you may ask? Well I will try to explain the concept (not easy) and then I will delve into some of the features that could be useful. In essence Linkedin is a contact management tool similar to Plaxo (if you know how that works) where by your contacts update their details and then these can be viewed by you, no more worrying about people changing email address and pone numbers. There is one key difference though in that you join a network and you can contact people through trusted connections. An example is that I am linked to Fred and Fred is linked to Tom, so I can ask ... more

Advantages Advantages Free, huge database and easy to use

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I have been sent the link to www.linkedin.com a few months ago by a friend and have been working with it quite a bit since. Very basically, Linkedin is a website where you can find the people, jobs and services you need through the people you know and trust, while you strengthen and extend your existing network. How does that work? 1. You register (a quick and simple progress). 2. You complete your profile by adding your current and previous employments with company names, job description, experience and education. 3. You add your own connections. So how do you add connections then? You can ... more

While most of us participate in the social networking through such websites as Facebook and Myspace, they might not always be appropriate. As the saying goes, don't mix business and pleasure, the same could be applied to online social networking. If you are looking for a place to connect with old, and new, colleagues Linkedin is just the right kind of a social networking website for you. It lets you put the personal nonsense aside and present yourself in a more professional manner, along with retaining your business image. Think of it as an extensive online resume. The extensive search ... more

Advantages Advantages well, if you cannot make it on your own - go for it

Disadvantages Disadvantages cannot get rid of them

Trying to unsubscribe from this site took lots and lots of e-mails; feedback etc. They continued to contact me with people for ages after. I also felt that the people that were recommended had nothing to do with my interests. I have to say that I didn't pay for the service but only had the free version so I cannot make any comments about the other services. My main problem was stopping them from e-mailing my account. They ignored my requests to stop introducing people. There seems to be no acknowledgement that you no longer wish to belong. I sent about 10 e-mails via their feedback form ... more
