I began banking with the T.S.B. at the tender age of 18 and from day one had no end of grief.
I must admit at this juncture that much of this was of my own doing, getting overdrawn and basically pratting them about. Eventually, I grew up; a prolonged spell of unemployment does that to even the most stupid and arrogant 21 year old.
When my account was reactivated, along with securing gainful employment once again, I refused a chequebook and settled for a cashpoint card only. Still I was charged for being overdrawn!
I didn’t have an overdraft facility and therefore the machine would only dispense the amount available in my account. The ‘helpful’ assistant to go home and check my statements. It was at this point that I reverted to the arrogant 18 year old and old him that if he cold not operate the banks’ computer system, then to find some job that he was capable of … or words to that effect!
He found some one that could do as I succinctly suggested and the competent member of staff found the error. I had been charged for being overdrawn because they had, on my previous statement, charged me for being overdrawn. I was informed that they would credit my account with both charges. I insisted that I be reimbursed in cash. “I’m sorry sir, we don’t do transactions on a Saturday.”
It was at this point that I lost it. My subsequent letter to the manager, for which I told them I expected the same £20 that they charge me for informing me that I was overdrawn, should also be credited to my account, resulted in success. The fact that I could have incurred a bad credit rating for their error was never resolved.
My final gripe about the now LloydsTSB, was when I applied for a loan and was informed that Insurance on the loan was compulsory. Yet if you apply on-line you discover that this is not the case. The cheeky bleeders even lend you the insurance premium and charge you interest on this.
Now to the good points; and there are a few.
The Internet banking system is absolutely great. No more queues, no more automated phone services, no more assistants that make you feel as if you are drawing money from their account instead of your own.
I regularly pay direct debits, standing orders and transfer money between accounts on-line. You can apply for loans, credit cards, mortgages etc., and in the case of loans (from my experience) receive a speedy reply on-line. The paperwork is then forwarded for a signature and the money is placed in your account on receipt.
Your balance is in real time, no waiting for records to be processed overnight. A positive bonus when you are always skint!
The downside of Internet banking: Will it put cashiers out of work? I am not sure, but I can say that in a recent recruitment drive where I work, the number of applicants from the banking fraternity was amazing. They seem as fed up trying to sell new style accounts, insurance, Isa’s etc. as we are of being asked.
Long live Internet banking! We can ignore banners with out feeling rude.
All in all am extremely happy with the LloydsTSB now.
Please note that all ratings refering to Internet Banking only apply to the services that I have actually used.

Review of Lloyds TSB Online Banking
Advantages: Pay bills without visiting the bank, online statements, transfer money between your accounts Disadvantages: Statements sometimes a few days behind
Advantages: Track account movements and transfer instantly between accounts. Apply for e-savngs account. Disadvantages: Access code device doesn't work overseas
Advantages: They will extend your overdraft without your prior knowledge or permission Disadvantages: That overdraft will then cost you darely should you ever fall into financial difficulties
Advantages: I can check my balance or whether a payment has gone out without leaving the house. I can also set up a full months bill payments in one go. Disadvantages: I still have to go to town to get money out - unfortunately I can't see a solution to this problem
