In theory, the idea behind Lycos's SMS service is a great one and certainly saves on the old mobile bill.
However, although it has the advantage of being a free service, it doesn't really have much else to offer.
I have visited many SMS sites, and in all honesty Lycos really cannot compete.
When you get to www.lycos.co.uk, on the home page you will notice a menu bar on the left hand side. Click on the 'SMS' icon. Easy so far but here is the annoying part. Before you get the chance to send your text message, you will be put through at least three other web pages. The first page is a sort of disclaimer where you have to click on either 'accept' or 'decline' with regards to the terms and conditions. You will then be taken to another page, where you must click on the 'send a message' button. THEN, finally, you come to the actual page you requested at least five minutes ago....the actual SMS page!!
Here, you have to fill in the relevant mobile number, and then a security code. This is where there is a three to four digit code and you must copy the code into the box below. I am presuming that this is so that nobody else can get access to your mobile numbers??? Whilst this is reassuring, I would really rather send my text messages quickly and not go through a long, boring process in order to do so.
By the time you get the chance to actually type in your message, you will have forgotten what you were going to write in the first place!!
I have visited many other SMS sites which are FAR quicker and easier and just as security-concious as Lycos minus the pain!! The best one to try, which is also the most fun, is www.mtnsms.com. Once you have registered here, you can text away to your heart's content. Please find a moment to read my opinion on it, titled 'The World United.'
Lycos really isn't worth the time or effort.
STOP, STOP, STOP (I SOUND LIKE THE GUY FROM THE IKEA AD NOW!!). TAKE ALL OF THE ABOVE, SCREW IT UP IN YOUR MIND AND CHUCK IT INTO A VIRTUAL WASTE PAPER BIN AS LYCOS HAVE NOW CHANGED THEIR SMS SYSTEM, SO PLEASE READ ON......
....Lycos.co.uk now have a new system for all those SMS junkies out there like myself, and they have now decided to get up to speed (literally!!)!!
In order to send SMS from their site, you now have to register with them. This only takes a few moments but it is worth it in the long-run as each time after this, when you go to send texts, you simply have to log-in.
Gone is all the 'Accept', 'Decline' mumbo jumbo, mentioned above, as you simply have to read a few terms and conditions regarding improper use, etc on registering with them.
The site now seems a LOT faster and also, an inbox facility has now been added, so that your friends can reply to any messages you send from the site and therefore, you can them read them online!!!
Lycos.co.uk have DEFINITELY got their act together now when it comes to sending SMS, and I thoroughly recommend this service!!
Advantages: free, relatively quick, easy Disadvantages: no address book
We are certainly in the age of text messaging at the moment, everywhere you go, you hear little 'beeps' when someone receives a message. Yet if you message frequently, you can run up huge bills without even realising, as some companies can charge up to 12p per message. This is where sites such as Lycos come in useful - providing you have access to a computer at the time you want to send the message of course.
Lycos is the first site I ever came ... ...charge to any mobile in the UK. It is very easy to use, is well presented, and you compose your message in a small window, designed to look like the display on your phone. It is much easier however typing in your message than fiddling about with the tiny keys on a phone, although you are still limited to 130 characters. But at least this way you can play about with, and edit, your message, until you have made the maximum use of the limited space ...

Advantages: Free, relatively fast, immediate sending of messages, immediate receipt, reliable-no lost messages Disadvantages: quite slow clicking through the terms and advertising
I first found Lycos in the days when their text messaging service was a well kept secret. Maybe it still is one of the little known services online today, but when I think of online text messaging I think Lycos first.
Lycos may be well known to people around the UK as a search engine, not one of the best of its field but still a good service. Others may know it for Fetch, a popular competition. However the SMS service is highly reliable. You have ... ...can send it to any number you wish which is on a UK network. The messages are sent INSTANTLY which is a HUGE bonus, although I wouldnt rely on the time stamp at the end of the message as the times are often ahead of themselves, so you feel like you are being contacted from the future!
However you cannot start an account like you can with services like Genie, so you can't have a telephone directory to which you can add telephone numbers. You must ...

Advantages: Free and very easy to use Disadvantages: Can be a little slow to send messages
I found Lycos's small messaging service about a year ago whilst using the search engine service on Lycos. I think that Lycos was one of the first companys to introduce free SMS and since then I have always used it as my first choice although now there are many other companies to offer the same or indeed better services. Lycos currently offeres up to 130 letters to send which compared to some of the latest mobile phones is quite good. (Nokia 8210 ... ...The process of actually sending a message is quite quick, firstly go into their web page www.lycos.co.uk, select free sms which is easy to find, (located down the left hand column of the page) then agree to the terms and conditions. Next you are given a small box in which to type in your message, one thing I like about the SMS services offered is that you can type in your message which is a lot faster than typing it into the mobile phone using the ...

Advantages: safe, easy, quick, free Disadvantages: the site can be slow sometimes
Lycos.co.uk have provided free SMS for about a year or so now and ever since then I have been using it.
I think it is great idea that Lycos have given everyone a chance to send free SMS because I think it should be free everywhere even on the phones but I suppose that's where the mobile network companies will lose a great amount of money.
A normal text message off a phone is about 10 or 12p so each time I SMS off the internet it is saving me a ... ...because I can type much faster than press the letters on the mobile phone so I just have to get to www.lycos.co.uk and start typing my message then click send.
The site is really easy to use and I think out of all the sites, this is the easiest to use because you don't have to register, anyone can use it. You don't need a mobile phone, if you do have a mobile phone you dont have to hand over your number. When you type in the number of the mobile ...

Lycos first established as one of the biggest UK search engines on the Internet, recently they have diversified into a number of web services. A favourite of mine is the free SMS service it has to offer. First introduced a few years ago it was a service which anyone could use, visitors would be put through a number of warnings and had to read terms and conditions several times. This became slightly annoying and sometimes meant ... ...to people, also a Lycos advert was added to every text message. However recently their service has changed and improved, now you need to sign up to send an SMS from Lycos, once you have given all of your details and decided on a password you can start sending messages to people. With the new service you can only send 20 free messages a day, this is usually enough for me and has the advantage of no advertising in the messages you send. By making users ...
