~~Searching~~
There are two ways of searching for things on Lycos the normal bog standard search facility and the directory format.
The search facility ... ...quickly. The information that you get is normal for a search result you get the link, some information about the website and the website URL. There is also an advanced search facility which allows you to search just The Web, UK and Ireland Sites, Tripod Homepages, Pictures, Sounds, Videos, Books or MP3 files. You can also refine the search for words or phrases that the results "should have", "must have" or "must not have". ... more

~~Searching~~ There are two ways of searching for things on Lycos the normal bog standard search facility and the directory format.
The search facility on Lycos is quite good, the results are brought quite quickly. The information that you get is normal for a search result you get the link, some information about the website and the website URL. There is also an advanced search facility which allows you to search just The Web, UK and Ireland Sites, Tripod Homepages, Pictures, Sounds, Videos, Books or MP3 files. You can also refine the search for words or phrases that the results "should have", "must have" or "must not have". You can also determine which part you search the "entire document", "title only", "title and text" or "text only". You can also define which language the page has to be in! If yu require any help on how to use the search facility there is a help section, which is quite good.
The directory is quite vast and has the following main headings; Arts, Entertainment and Games, Business and Finance, Careers, Education, Parenting and Society, Health and Fitness, Information and Services, Lifestyle, Motoring, Music and MP3, Science and Technology, Sports, Telecomms and Interent, Travel and Holidays and UK Regional Directory. Each of these again has many, many sub-headings, which makes for a very large dictionary of websites. The best sites, which Lycos recommend, are labelled with a wagging dog! (Cool!)
~~Services~~ To one side of the home page of Lycos is a column labelled "Services", obviously these are services, which you can access via the Lycos website. These are; Love@Lycos, Free SMS, Logos & Ringtones, UK Maps, Win with Lycos, Holidays Online, Daily Horoscopes, Lycos Chat, Loan Finder, Credit Card Finder, Voice Chat from Mediaring, Free Email Services, News, Weather, My Lycos, Play Games Online, Free Internet Access and Free Homepage. I wont start to explain all of these services, I will just explain the main ones.
The free SMS service is one of the best parts of the site. It allows you to send free text messages to mobile phones. There is a limit of 130 characters that you can type in your message, the rest is taken up by a small advert at the end of the text message. At the moment they are running a send a joke for Comic Relief, these are quite funny jokes and will keep your friends quite amused!
Win with Lycos is a link to a page showing all the promotions that are happening at the moment in which you can win a prize. At the moment you can win a scooter, a chat with Craig David (as if any one would want to!), £10,000 (more like it!) or a snow boarding holiday. The main way to win money of Lycos is to play their "FETCH" games, which is run in conjunction with www.tombola.com. The aim of the game is to click on the mounds of earth in the garden, the dog will fetch something from the dirt. If you get fours of the same, shown at the side then you can win £10, £50, £100, £500, £1000 or £10,000. The animation for this is quite good, the only problem being if you don't have the java virtual machine installed with your web browser.
The UK Maps is basically what you would expect, it is maps of the UK! This services is run in association with www.multimap.com. To access them you search on a place name, post code, London streets, grid reference or air port. The detail of the maps goes from the view of the whole country down to major roads and motorways. Not much good if you want to find a street outside of London, but you can get a general feel.
The e-mail service that they run is quite good, but it is much like all other web based e-mail services that other people run. I can't comment on how good this is, as I have never used it, but I would assume that in conjunction with their ISP this would be quite a good service.
The games that Lycos run are run by www.pogo.com. The following games are being offered on the Lycos website; under Board Games - Backgammon, Checkers and Chess. Under Card Games - Bridge, Cribbage, Euchre, Hearts, Solitaire, Spades. Under Word Games - Word Search. Under Puzzle Games - Animal Ark and Overflow. Under Arcade Games - Doomsday, Tank Hunter, Tude Runner and Void. The only requirements that these games have is that the web browser is Java enabled.
~~Advertising~~ Inevitably there is always going to be advertising on most websites, but on Lycos this does not slow the site down. On the home page there is a column titled Lycos Partners and one called Lycos Shopping. These are the main links to sites that they are advertising, it is better than having huge banners, although the site does still have banners, there are not as many as equivalent sites.
~~General~~ The site is generally quite fast and is very easy to navigate, it is very similar to the yahoo website apart from the colours. I think that this is better that yahoo as is offers more services to its users. The home page also has an overview of the news on it with links to the major stories along with financial information. This is a very large website with other, partner websites in almost every country and every language you can think of.

Lycos is an absolutely great site now and it has really developed over the last few years to be a strong contender with other main web domains such as Yahoo and Alta Vista. However, I now think that Lycos can not just compete with these sites but they have now developed into a very powerful web domain. The following was happened on 20 to 23 December 2007.
I was a customer of lycos.cop.uk and decide to leave them forever after this bad experience. I have a domain signup with them and was not allowed to point my domain to other server although they did provide the function. Trevor Day told me the cheap service that I have got from other providers were not capable, not lycos.co.uk faults. ... ...123-REG My username with lycos.co.uk is ?????-????? I always considered Lycos first and foremost as a Search Engine and have been using it, aswell as Yahoo, for this purpose frequently.
Just today I decided to explore the Lycos site thoroughly and I must say I was very impressed.
The range and variety of features offered is really quite amazing and very interesting and useful.
I will try and list some of the sections that I covered today for the benefit of those of you who do not already know.

Lycos. co. uk is a very useful search engine. It is very quick and will bring up accurate searches, instead of the usual irrevelant searches. It is very user-friendly, as it is not very difficult to use. The website itself is quite decorative and quite pleasing to the eye.
