~Rendezvous~
I had been a member of Lycos chat since Christmas 2001, but after a short spell of being addicted back then, I just couldn't be bothered to go back on. That absence a couple ... ...had been on since me first registering.
~Like a Sore Thumb~
Lycos has created a monster of a chat site with this one. There are so many things that set it apart from the rest.
First of all, the whole chat site is set on a ship, which has different 'decks'. To get to the room you want, you select the deck, then the room. For instance, for Technoclub you would have to go to the 'Youth Deck' then to the club. more

The amount of chat rooms that they have in there is absolutely fantastic. This may sound good, but with some chat sites most of them would be empty, but not with Lycos. You'll nearly always find some one in the room of your choice, whether it be Star Wars or Big Brother and, at peak times, just about all of them are full.
And if you are not happy with the selection that they have, you can create your own. The posed a problem a while back, as most created rooms were solely for the use of cyber sex. These rooms have all been culled now, leaving the popular 'Bi & Lez ONLY! NO MEN' rooms to be the most popular on the self-created list.
Putting in a Guest Book is a stroke of genius. Having them means that you can contact another member while they are offline, as well as being able to leave them gross picture that you wouldn't be able to do in the main chat.
'Emotes' are also something brilliant, allowing you to do something without having to type it out and sound stupid. If you type / at the start of your sentence, followed by, lets say Snog, then a member name, it would say '[Your Username] Snogs [Other User] to the floor'. These tend to get over used, especially by the girls on the site. You unlock these as you spend more time on the site, but more on that later.
Like Ciao, you can also have your own HTML profile, but only they help you with it, by giving you little pictures, as well as some effects and backgrounds to boot, making it easy for you to make your little corner on the web beautiful.
The 'Bots that Lycos have are something that I have not seen on any other site. 'Bots are chatters who are not really people, just a computer which automatically responds to anything that is said to it. Captain, Technochic (the runner of Technoclub), Parrot and Shipsrat are the main ones, and you get certain little ones that leave you messages like 'Like Big Brother? Click HERE for the Big Brother chat Room', but these do not actually chat.
The amazing thing about the 'bots is that they have an answer for everything. Ask Technochic whether she is a real person she will reply 'Well what do you think?’ but this is not the most shocking thing. What really does scare is the manner of Shipsrat, who is the bad boy of the ship. He stays in the chat room where al those who misbehave are sent. He swears at you, says stuff about your mother amongst other things. And I thought Lycos to be friendly...
~Just another one of the guys~
Lycos does have everything that a normal chat should have as well, like being able to load photos up and having private conversations in a different window, etcetera, where as these are the bases, they do not make the site, but the extras (see above few paragraphs) do.
~I am Going to be King Someday~
While these may all be things can make it be a little bit above the rest, there is one weapon that Lycos use to blast all the others out of the water, and that is the use of ranks. You move up the ranks by chatting on Lycos, the amount of lines of words you use, the amount of Guest Book messages you receive and, most of all, how nice you are to other chatters.
There are literally hundreds of ranks that you can get, from measly Passenger to High Ranking Mid Shipman, to the almighty heights of King/Queen of Lycos, currently of which nobody has gotten to.
And, unlike Ciao's rankings, the higher your ranking, the more things it unlocks. A passenger will have nothing but humble words to aid them in their quest for Lycos gold. Higher up, you unlock more stuff to use. Emotes are the main ones that you get, but along the way you get others, like setting how long of a period of inactivity before they set you to be 'away', amongst other 'unlockables'.
~Ghost of Navigators (an Iron Maiden song for those of you who don't know~
Navigators are members on Lycos who keep everything running smoothly on behalf of Lycos, much like prefects at school. They can send people down to the Hold, the room that Shipsrat lives in, if they are behaving badly as well as being able to put reports about Lycos up on a navigator’s page.
To become a Navigator you have to be at a certain rank or above, as well as having to take a test, which asks you just about everything about Lycos chat, meaning only a few elites get through.
They also get a cool little anchor thing next to their names in the chat...
~Nothing Without You~
Of course, Lycos Chat would be nothing without its members. I am not going to name them like I said I was going to to them, because I end up sounding stupid.
~Overall~
A great community, and a great place to hang for a while. If you ever go on, just drop ugly24seven a line, he is cool.
Advantages: meet new people, navigators are very freindly, and very safe. Disadvantages: none what so ever.
I started using Lycos chat about a year ago, my best friend moved to Belgium and the only way we really kept in contact was through chat servers, I was having a lot of problems with the ones I was using so she recommend that I try Lycos chat. She had been a member for a long time and claimed it was the best she had ever tried so I thought why not, cant do any harm.
After I joined (which was very easy) it took me 5 minutes to get hooked. ~~~About ... ...has bound to have heard about Lycos it is one of the most popular search engines around.
When you get on the main page on the left hand side is a list of options, chat is one of them all you have to do is click on it and you can either register as a guest or as a full time member which is what I done. After you register you can start chatting right away. All you’re options are on the menu to alter or start new things just go to 'my page'

Advantages: VERY easy to use, friendly navigators and chatters Disadvantages: server crashes from time to time and charges for some of the extra features
I have been a chatter on Lycos for almost 2 years now, and I have found it to be the best chat site around.
It is based on a ship, with 9 'decks', each with about 20 or so rooms. The rooms have different headings, such as on the CITY deck, you will find rooms from Edinburgh to Portsmouth, London to Glasgow and many others in between.
There are love@lycos rooms, such as for the over 40's/30's etc, dating decks, footballers rooms, rooms for teenagers ... ...need to visit, even if only as a Guest Chatter. (But if you only register as a Guest Chatter, you will not be able to view peoples profiles or add anyone as a friend) Registration is free, and once 'on board', you hold the rank of 'Passenger'. Eventually, you will find that the more you chat, the quicker your rank progresses...all the way through Sailor/Steward/Petty Officer right up to Admiral. The higher your rank, the more emotes you get. These ...
