If you have a standard email account like me, (not web based – hotmail style) then what do you do if you’re away from home, want to check your email and send one too?
Well there are actually some internet-based options, which let you manage your standard email account via the web, when you cannot access your mail in the usual fashion via Outlook or any other mail package.
The web facility I recommend in these circumstances is mail2web; available at the URL you might guess which is www.mail2web.com
The front page loads very quickly, it is uncluttered with just two banner ad’s using the top inch of the screen.
To check your email you have to enter your email address and password. The password could be one that you assigned when you joined your particular ISP, or it may be a totally random offering, such as mine on NTLworld, which is jumble of letters and numbers. It’s a good idea now you know this facility exists to make a note of your password if you don’t know it, so next time you’re away you can use this wonderful tool!
The site works in conjunction with the email address and password you provide to guess it’s way into your ISP’s mail server. For me it works without fail, and if I’m away from home any new mail sitting on the NTL server is visible to me within seconds.
An advanced login facility exists if the site cannot fathom a valid route to your provider. This route requires your ISP’s servers name or IP address, your user ID, (first part of your email before the @ sign) and password.
As I log in successfully on the standard log in I cannot comment on the success of entering via the advanced route!
The standard login route is not secure, I should point out at this stage, but rest assured for you paranoid types, a secure login route is available, for instance if you are accessing from an internet café.
Once you’ve accessed your account online, you will see any new mail still on the server, so that is essentially any new mail received since you last opened your email package at home.
If you have any junk mail or unwanted super-large video attachments, which are invariably, received then you can delete them here and now, to save a job later!
You can read your mail online obviously, and you can also use mail2web to send any replies or write new mail.
When finished managing your mail online then you can log out via the button provided. It recommends that you clear the cache and close all running windows to fully protect your privacy. This is nothing to worry about; it just ensures no one else can use your email account to send spam or abuse.
The mail2 portfolio also enables you to manage your email if you have a PDA (personal digital organiser) or WAP enabled mobile. The story is much the same but the sites are available at www.mail2pda.com and www.mail2wap.com respectively.
I cannot say how these work, as I do not use my Psion to collect my mail, nor do I have a WAP phone (I’m waiting for cheap GPRS or even 3G!) though I suspect the performance is good, as of the web site.
On a side point, the company running 'mail2' also offer a facility to read newsgroups (USENET) without using a newsgroup reader or news facility of an email package. Check www.news2web.com for that one.
A very useful tool when away from home. If you thought you didn’t have webmail you do now!
Advantages: Free, allows you to check your POP e-mail from anywhere Disadvantages: You need to know your server settings.
You're away on business/holiday and want to check your e-mail. Problem. youe e-mail is not web based!!! What will you do?
The answer my friends is use mail2web.com
First let me explain about the different types of e-mail there are. There are two main types POP and Web Based. We all know what web based e-mail is. it is provided by services like hotmail and yahoo. To check your e-mail you have to go to their website, and log in to send, recieve and ... ...type of e-mail where you set up the account in an e-mail program like Outlook Express, and send and recieve e-mails through it. When you have this type of e-mail you are only able to check your e-mail when you are at home at the computer that the e-mail address is set up on. WRONG. Use mail2web.
Mail2web allows you to check your pop e-mail accounts online when you are away from home. When you go to www.mail2web.com you are presented with a clear ...

Advantages: It's free, easy to use and very useful. Disadvantages: none.
www.mail2web.com is one of the handiest web sites i've come across. If you need to check your e-mail account from anywhere in the world then this is the place to do it. All you need to do is enter your e-mail address and the password for your mail account and up pops a list of all the e-mails waiting for you. If you have trouble logging into your mail account then you can try using the advanced login. For this you will need to enter your pop3 server, ... ...list of e-mails waiting for you, you can either read the e-mails, delete them or compose a new e-mail to send to somebody. This service can prove really useful if somebody has sent you an e-mail with a large attachment that won't download properly through your normal e-mail client or if you are having problems downloading certain e-mails. All you need to do is login to your account on here and then simply delete the problematic e-mail.

Advantages: Free, quick, useful Disadvantages: None to speak of
Both Twigger and Mail2Web allow you to access your pop3 mailbox from any computer with web (port 80) access. You type in or select your details from a drop down box, click a button and have instant access to your mailbox. From here both sites offer you the ability to send, delete and move emails; pretty much everything standard web mail sites allow. And of course, both sites are free.
WHAT ARE THEY USEFUL FOR?
The main use for these sites is to ... ...simple and easy. These sites are also great to delete unwanted mail on your ISP’s servers, rather than downloading it to your computer and dealing with it locally. If your granny has just sent you a 10 meg video of her playing gin rummy in the nursing home, you don’t need to spend days downloading it, just delete it off the server. And while you’re at it tell your granny to use a more advanced compression algorithm, perhaps telling ...

Advantages: access mail from any pc Disadvantages: a bit slow sometimes
www.mail2web.com allows you to collect your email from anywhere in the world. All you have to do is to enter your email address and password to access your account. It works with most ISP's.
If you have more than one email account you can 'log off' fronm the site and then 'log on' again using your new email address.
You don't have to sign up , fill in forms or leave any details to use this service, and its free.
I find this very useful when I'm ... ...important messages and it can help stop your email box geting clogged up if you get a lot of mail.
You can delete emails from here so that you don't have to bother downloading them on your own pc. You can also reply to email from the site.
I did notice a rather odd thing about this reply service though. The return email address starts with 'mail.' which means that if someone uses the reply function to answer you then you won't get their reply. ...

This approach allows you to check any new emails on your server and you can send emails from your account. I stumbled across this after setting up a web based email account for when I am travelling around and need ... ...based email and wrote to my ISP (NTLworld) to investigate further. NTL then put me on to mail2web and I haven't looked back since.
Once you have looked at any new mail you can choose to delete them there and then or leave then and they will still be delivered to your inbox next time you log on.
I find this service extremely helpful as now I can manage one email account either from my PC or anywhere else in the World, without having the need to ...
