You're away on business/holiday and want to check your e-mail. Problem. youe e-mail is not web based!!! What will you do?
First let me explain about the different types of e-mail there are. There are two main types POP and Web Based. We all know what web based e-mail is. it is provided by services like hotmail and yahoo. To check your e-mail you have to go to their website, and log in to send, recieve and write e-mails.
POP e-mail is different. It is the type of e-mail where you set up the account in an e-mail program like Outlook Express, and send and recieve e-mails through it. When you have this type of e-mail you are only able to check your e-mail when you are at home at the computer that the e-mail address is set up on.
WRONG. Use mail2web.
Mail2web allows you to check your pop e-mail accounts online when you are away from home.
When you go to www.mail2web.com you are presented with a clear screen with 2 boxes. One asking for your e-mail address, and the other for your password. Type in both and away you go. You can look at any e-mails you have recieved, and reply to them, and create and send new e-mails.
Easy peasy!! However, this may not always work. When you put in your e-mail address and password, mail2web will try to guess the server settings. This is often unsuccesful though, and you then have to use the Advanced Login.
I know, Advanced Login sounds daunting. It isn't really. To use the advanced login you need to know three things. 1. Your POP3 Server Name or IP Address 2. User ID/Login Name 3. Password
You may be thinking 'What the heck is my Pop3 server and Login Name?' Don't worry. you can get this information easialy. To get this information, before you go away open up Outlook Express. On the menu bar at the top of the screen click 'Tools'. Then click on 'Accounts' You will now have a window appear with 4 tabs at the top. Click the one that says 'Mail'. Select your e-mail address and then click the 'Properties' button. On the window that appears click the 'Servers' tab at the top. Write down the contents of the box that says 'Incoming Mail (POP3):'. This is your POP3 Server Name. Then copy what is in the box that says 'Account Name'. This is youe User ID/Login Name. You should know your password. If you don't, then you're silly.
Now you know these details, and have written them down on a bit of paper which you have put somwhere handy, like in your wallet, you can use mail2web.
Put your details in then click the 'Check Mail' button. You will then see a list of all the e-mails you have recieved. By clicking on the subject, the e-mail is opened in a new window. You can then read it, reply to it and forward it by clicking the respective links above the message.
On the screen that lists all your messages you can click on 'New Message' to write an e-mail. The screen you get is self explanatory, and not that unlike hotmail. Write your e-mail, put in the address you want to send it to and click 'Send'. Quite simple really!!
You do have the option of deleting the e-mails, but I do not reccomend this. What the mail2web service is doing is logging in to youe e-mail server and viewing the e-mails. When you get home and check your e-mails you will still be able to download messages you have read to your computer in Outlook Express.
Overall an excellent free service.
