Mail.com
A few years ago I was fed up with the average names of emails such as yahoo.co.uk and googlemail.com – very unoriginal, although reliable, so I went in hunt for a free email site in which I could have a better @ something to suit me better.
After looking through various links on google (got to love that search engine!) I came across mail.com.
MY EMAIL DOT COM
WWW.Mail.com is a free web based email site which allows you to choose from a range of different domain names.
The sign up form is very easy to understand, filling in the usual information such as your name , birthdate etc and choosing a password and username in which you want for your new email address. It is a clear one page form with a security code to fill in at the end – very simple.
On this page you are also asked to select your domain name from a list of around a hundred different domain names, all positioned under different categories for ease of selection. I wont list every domain name here as really the list is too long, though to give you an example of some please see below;
Mail.com – this is the default domain name if you so choose to have this one, though personally if you are selecting this email site, I would think that you are wanting a more selective address.
Category – Jobs Under this category there are many domain names which cover a good selection of different jobs such as; chef.net fireman.net graphic-designer.com mad-scientist.com teachers.org and many more…. I don’t think you will find every different type of job here, though there is a wide variety to choose from, some serious and some (like the mad scientist one) humorous
Category - Hobbies. A smaller list of domain names here though still a variety to choose from such as; Rockfan.com – My favourite and my choice in domain name. Petlover.com Collector.org Madonnafan.com
Category – Locations If you would rather an email showing your specific location then there are many to choose from under this category such as; washington.usa.com swissmail.com pacific-ocean.com englandmail.com Being an American based email site I believe – there are more US state name domains though a good choice ofother countries too, though not specific places.
Category – Miscellaneous Under this category you would find what you would probably expect from the category title – a very vast list of different domain names such as; 2die4.com angelic.com been-there.com cyber-wizard.com earthling.net mailpuppy.com And many more – most along the funnier side than the serious.
ENTER YOUR DOMAIN
As you see – the sign up is very simple and your email address is ready to use straight away after sign up.
The email main site set up is very simple in simple layout and colours – nothing spectacular though do you really want that? All I want is to check my emails properly (and you get this fine – most of the time, though more on that later!).
You have a range of different options to personalize your email address and messages from creating your own signature to attach to selected emails and set up auto reply emails which I have not had the need to try yet though I can see the benefits from this.
You are also able to receive email from up to five other email addresses which has come in very handy for me recently as I have changed my email on certain sites though I don’t have to think about checking every email address for new mail – it is all sent to my mail.com one which is great. I have checked a few times just to make sure it is working fine, and so far I have had no problems with this feature at all.
There is a usual junk mail and spam filter on here which enables you to personally select the addresses you deem as junk or let the email filter them for you (which it does even if you select to choose your own). This is both a good and bad thing as it does keep junk mail from your main inbox on the whole, though also filters much needed emails and if you don’t check your junk inbox regularly you could miss important emails – especially as it deletes them automatically after a short period of time.
You are able to organize your email account with as many folders as you wish though you will have to add the emails to each folder as there is no filter for this – yet it enables you to keep somewhat organized (I have tried though I don’t seem to be a very organized person in nature!). There are also some basic settings such as how you wish to view your messages etc, though not really many here at all. As far as I can tell – you cant change the look of your email so are stuck with the blue colours which is great if you love blue.
There are selective tabs at the top of your email pages to make it easier to get to certain options such as storing your contacts list, a fully working and interactive calendar with large spaces per day to add what you want with a page to list only your events if you choose, and a basic notepad.
There is also a forum and chat attached to this email with many different forums and discussions – this seems quite a popular forum though I have never personally used this feature. From what I have seen, it is well moderated though no real filters on bad words or age related discussions so be aware of this for younger members.
A new feature they have recently brought in is a shopping tab which finds a ange of prices for different items from many different online stores. You are also able to read and write reviews here though unpaid unlike the great Ciao!
There is a premium service on this email domain which does cost some money though I have tried to check on that a few times for reference in this review though every time I am greeted to a service unavailable notice unfortunately. I am not sure whether this is because they advertise it though don’t run it or whether they are just always having problems which to be honest is probably the case.
DOMAIN SUCCESS AND PROBLEMS
I generally have no real problems using the email though quite often (more often than with other email sites) the server goes down or is unavailable which is pretty annoying when you are expecting an important email or two. This is one of the main reasons I have another couple of email addresses for the important ones. I have also found that on occasion, other peoples emails can not get through to my email address – the most recent is Ciao itself which causes problems for both me and the sender. This is probably one of the worst things about this email site – the constant problems with not being able to get into it. Other than this I am happy with the email though I wouldn’t recommend it for receiving or sending important mails just in case.
These free domains for emails do boast that they limit the amount of spam in your emails and I do admit, although I have read that many people seem to get a lot of spam through this email server, I don’t find I do. Yes there is the odd one or two that get through though nothing to write home about really, and these few that do slip by can always be filtered. You do get a number of adverts on the bottom of emails which can be annoying though again, I don’t really see that as a problem at all.
You get a decent sized 5mb mailbox which stores a vast amount of emails – I have never personally got to the limit and sometimes when I haven’t checked for days I get a fair few emails in there which is good, the regular features with sending mail, such as the actual writing and sending, using attachments and adding new contacts all work perfectly – no problems here.
FINAL WORD
Yes, this site does have a big problem with its server going down and us email users who need to get into our email though are unable to – and of course, this can be a big problem, though this is really the only problem I find – and I have a backup email for this which I can have my email from this address sent there and that does seem to work well on the whole – even if I cant get into my mail.com account so there are ways around it, though as said above – if you are going to send or receive many important emails then I would suggest going to a more reliable domain.
The main advantage to this free email site is the vast lot of domain names you can choose form and there is bound to be something to suit everyone. I had a hard time choosing the best one for me as there was a few I really felt suited me.
When the site is working fine then it works fast and efficiently and although doesn’t have as many features as other email sites, it does do its main job…most of the time.

An address book a search advertisers feature and calendar which can be used to note appointments are included as features. E cards are available and a few games.
Overall keep away unless you like pop up ads in your face and spam from notorious criminal gangs blocking up ...

Advantages: all the regular email features, web based system, reliable and secure, choice of email addys Disadvantages: not much
Mail.com is another web based email service like Hotmail, Yahoo, Excite, Bigfoot etc. So why choose Mail.com over any of those? Well for one thing what do you want from your email? A secure retrievable service. Maybe something memorable as an email address? Well you could choose from several occupations, say like fredsmith@engineer.com - or say you are a Londoner, you could have fredsmith@london.com. Not bad is it - surely a bit more personal than ... ...a webmail rather than your ISP's regular email service? For one thing suppose your ISP ups its price and you want to move to another rival service (as we have done with AOL and moved to NTL where it's free 24/7), then you've got to change your email address. You may not be able to have the same name even. If you used to be fredsmith@aol.com and change to say NTL, they may already have a Fred Smith registered and you may have to be FSmith@... or even ...

There are pop up windows when you login besides the glaring adverts all over the pages, but with the current state of online advertising rates at the moment its hardly surprising. I also lost all my previous emails and was unable to log on to my account for two months after the software which runs the site was updated at Easter.

Advantages: Very relaible. No lost mail Disadvantages: Complicated folder set-up
I don't really use my mail.com account that much anymore, but I did/do use it enough to be able to write a reasonable opinion. I found mail.com by searching for free email sites on yahoo. There was something about it there that made it stand out from the rest. I used it quite successfully for a number of months and never had on problem. IF they would guarantee a failsafe service, I might subscribe.
