Free email services are a great way of reducing the amount of unwanted email you might receive through your main account with an ISP for example. Rather than submitting your main email address you can use a free email address for surveys or when buy products, because very often your email address will be sold onto companies who will send you spam and other unwanted junk.

I have been using mail.com for this very purpose for over a year now. Mail.com offers a relatively simple sign up procedure and offers you the choice of many 'domain' address to choose from, which range from @profssional.com to @cutey.com there are many to choose from and you should be able to find one which suites. The mail server itself is fast and writing new mail is a fairly simple task and of course there is a handy online address book with your account.

Unfortunately as this is a free service to users, the service is funded through relentless advertising. There are pop up windows when you login besides the glaring adverts all over the pages, but with the current state of online advertising rates at the moment its hardly surprising. I also lost all my previous emails and was unable to log on to my account for two months after the software which runs the site was updated at Easter.

By using mail.com, you are of course doing the world a favour by not using Microsoft's hotmail, I could go on for ever about how that company is running a monopoly on not only the software market, but is seriously doing its best to do the same thing to the internet - in the short term all Windows users will need to have a Microsoft passport/hotmail account just to register products with the corporation.
