I’ve got to admit I’m a bit of a sucker for any sort of internet reward scheme, I’ve lost track of the number I’ve signed up for, most of which have gone the way of the dinosaurs, and usually always before I’ve reached the minimum payment level.
So of course when I heard about yet another, from mailround.com I signed up for it and I have now been a member since June 2001.
HOW DOES MAILROUND.COM WORK?
It is a form of paid for email type scheme, the big difference here being that mailround.com do not send you specific emails that you get paid for reading.
Rather, when you download your email, a small advert, called a “stamp”, is inserted into the body of your email. You have to click on this “stamp” to take you to the advertisers home page.
You can also add stamps to out-going emails.
The "stamps" are added by a small application called The Mailman, which you download from the mailround.com web site and are supposed to be based on your interests which you indicate at the time of joining.
You have no control over which of your incoming e-mails will be stamped. However ever time you send an email to an address which is new to The Mailman, he will ask if you wish the email to be stamped. If you say yes then all future emails to that address will be stamped, unless you change the settings which are saved on your profile on the mailround.com site.
A cash reward is allocated at the end of each month and altho it is dependant on the number of “stamps” you have clicked on and how many “stamps” you have attached to outgoing e-mails, you do not get paid on a per click basis. Rather a certain percentage of mailround.com's advertising revenue for that month is allocated for distribution to the members and your usage earns you either a bronze, silver, gold or, for exceptionally high usage, platinum awards.
The web site gives estimated ANNUAL reward levels at each level as:
Platinum - up to £500 Gold - up to £100 Silver - up to £70 Bronze - up to £50
Altho given the current state of on-line advertising and my own personal experience I think these may be rather over-stated (see below).
Once you reach a certain minimum balance in your account you can either receive gift vouchers, a cheque or donate your balance to charity.
The vouchers can be requested when you have £10, £20, £30 or £50 in your account. The reward partners include:
Amazon Pizza Hut M&S Tesco Marriott Hotels David Lloyd Leisure
Apart from Amazon, which is an on-line voucher, all other vouchers are real paper ones which are posted to you.
A cheque can be requested at £50 and £100.
The nominated charity is Children’s Aid Direct, which does a lot of good work to alleviate the suffering of children in various trouble spots and deprived areas around the world. The balances required to make a donation are £10, £20, £30, £50.
HOW DOES IT WORK FOR DAVEKING?
Firstly, The Mailman slows down the rate at which your emails are downloaded. I don’t find this slowdown too inconvenient on my current machine which has a 56kps modem, however my previous PC had a 14.4kps modem and I had to de-install The Mailman on that machine as it was taking forever to access my mail.
The Mailman is supposed to work with most ISPs and email programs. I use totalise.net and have no problems as far as them being my ISP is concerned, however I find that I cannot access their web-mail system, mail.totalise.co.uk, and instead have to use Outlook Express, which is slightly annoying but not too inconvenient.
I haven’t had any problems accessing any emails I’ve forwarded to my hotmail.com account.
The Mailman does NOT support AOL and will not work on Macintosh computers.
OK, the important bit, THE MONEY!!!
For each of my first four months of use I received a silver award, the amounts paid were £4.00, £3.75, £4.00 and £4.00.
However, from September the number of stamped emails which you SEND OUT, was given a larger weighting in the award calculation and as a result last month I only received a bronze award of £2.50.
The secret therefore to getting a higher award each month is to ensure that every email you send is stamped otherwise even if you receive a hundred emails a day you are unlikely to be awarded anything more than bronze.
However bear in mind that the “stamp” may make the email inaccessible for some recipients, for example one of my friends has a Bush Internet TV, and she is unable to access any emails which have a “stamp” attached. Some commercial sites have also rejected emails which I have sent to them with a stamp attached.
I had intended allowing my balance to accumulate to £50 to receive a cheque, however I recently noticed buried away in the terms and conditions on the site, that all rewards expire on the 31st December each year, these expired rewards then have to be redeemed by 30th June, otherwise they are forfeited forever.
So in August, having reached the minimum balance for a voucher and determined to get something out of them in case they went the way of some many other internet reward schemes, I requested a £10 Tesco voucher which I received in the post within 7 days.
You can also receive £2 for referring friends and family, up to a maximum of 15 referrals, as long as they use The Mailman for 7 consecutive days. All the Referred User needs to ensure you get your award is your email address.
CONCLUSION
Well like most schemes on the internet it isn’t gonna make you your fortune but the awards are given for minimal effort and can bring you a voucher every 3-4 months or so. And they are one of the very few schemes that I've been a member of that has actually paid out. I reckon that as long as you have a fast enough modem there is really no excuse not to give it a try.
The Mailman can be easily de-installed and he can also be disabled at any time by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del together, select “Bmailgui” and clicking on “End Task”.
Advantages: You get paid for sending and receiving stamps (adverts) Disadvantages: Does not work with all servers or web based email, slows down email collection
Are you one of those people who has signed up with every paid-for-email scheme around only to find that they don’t send you any emails and thus you don’t get a penny. Well, at last I have found a scheme that not only pays but pays quite well.
I actually signed up with Mailround in October as I was lured by the offer of 150 free beenz. In the past five months I have made £22. Doesn’t really sound much but you can make money each ... ...send and receive emails the way you usually do. Sounds too good to be true? Well that’s what they all say... So how exactly does it work then?

Advantages: Simple, easy, effortless Disadvantages: Interferes with telnet
Of all the 'get paid online' experiences, mailround works the best (apart, of course from Ciao.com). It didn't stop like many others, and probably won't.
Basically, when you join mailround, you have to download a little program, which puts adverts on your outgoing and incoming emails. The more you mail, the more rewards you get. Every month you are assigned a certain amount of money as a reward, which can be exchanged for vouchers when you have ... ...I'm a moderate email user, and tend to get a £10 voucher every few months. Vouchers available include Marks and Spencers, Amazon, Pizza Hut and Tescos.
The adverts are in the form of 'stamps', which go at the side of the emails. To be honest, the stamps are unobstrusive, and actually liven up the email a lot of the time. Also, because you can set areas of interest for yourself and your freinds, the adverts are quite relevant - I've often actually ...

Advantages: This used to be a good service but I can't see it lasting now Disadvantages: They are rude, they don't know what there rules are and they don't really want to help when you have a problem
OK here’s the deal.. I signed up with mailround a while ago and was really happy with the way things were going. In the beginning I was getting £4.00 a month for sending out basic e mails which to me was fine, not a lot of money but a lot more then many other paid e mail programs were offering. Anyway for the first three months I got this £4.00 a month and so on the third month I decided to reopen my mailing list and start sending out regular ... ...related just what I sent to friends for fun. Anyway the next month I got up to what is known as the silver award. I was well chuffed as for sending out these extra mails to my mates I had gone up by £2.00 and now I had earned £6.00 and all for sending out some more mails to my friends. This was good I thought so I started to use the mailman for what I thought it was paying me for, to send and receive mails. I started to send out a lot more e mails ...
