***MICROSOFT INSTANT MESSENGER***
Microsoft instant messenger is another one of those programs that does exactly what is says on the ‘Tin’, it’s an ‘instant’ message service provided by Microsoft.
***FEATURES***
This service allows users who are logged in to talk in ‘Real time’ to any of the people in their address book, who are also online at the same time.
This offers a great twist on the already popular e-mail and text messenger services that we all know and love. But with instant messaging, it’s instant, you get an answer instantly. It’s almost like being on the telephone to your mates, for only the price of an internet call. But better still, there’s more; you can create a room with a few of you mates, and all join in, it’s brilliant.
The messenger service offers feature like having warning messages of whose online, what e-mails you have in your hotmail account, setting your self away, busy etc.
Microsoft instant messenger also offers the user not only to transfer text, but to transfer files too. Great for those who also wish to transfer pictures etc. it has all the feature you’ll ever need.
***SPEED***
Speed of the program is pretty impressive, especially as it stays on start-up when you switch on your computer. So when you decide to connect, it’s there waiting. It connects it’s self, so that your mates know that your online, so they can contact you if you wish.
The program staying in the tool-bar may annoy some people, who are short on memory for games etc. or have older resource intensive computers.
***AMOUNT OF CONNECTION TAKEN UP***
It generally takes up very little of your internet connection, and for most of the time is doesn’t use any. This is great for those who wish to chat on instant messenger, read web pages and/or download MP3’s using an 56k internet connection.
***RELIABLILITY***
The reliability of the program is generally good, although it’s as good as anything on the internet. It has it’s days when it’s down/or you can’t log in, like most services on the internet (Listen up CIAO!!!).
***COST ***
Cost of this program is obviously free, that’s why it’s become so successful. It can be downloaded from Microsoft’s website, and thankfully it's not very big in site (for those like me with a 56k modem). I think it can also be installed straight from Microsoft Windows 98 onward. But you can guarantee that this version will be an old one , and after using it for ten minutes, you will constantly get prompted to update.
***EASY TO SIGHN UP/INSTALL?***
It’s relatively easy to sign up, although you’ll have a job getting your required e-mail address if you’re a new member to hotmail. You will most probably have to add ‘UK’, ‘2001’, ‘2002’ to the end. That down to how popular the service is.
***SUMMARY***
It’s a very good instant messaging program which is fast, relatively inexpensive and easy to sign up and download. Although there are alternatives notable ICQ, Microsoft’s instant messenger is up there with the best.
