Hmm... Nice Klimt
Advantages: well documented about the Beethoven frieze
Disadvantages: not a lot to see otherwise
...I had friends visiting from Britain over the weekend and they wanted to see some of Vienna?s cultural past, but with time being quite short, the object was to do things that weren?t time consuming. Knowing that they?d want to see Klimt, but not have time for the Klimtoganza that is Belvedere, home to ?The Kiss? amongst other works, I took them to the Secession, by Karlsplatz, to see the Beethoven Frieze. Many tourists will get their first sight of the Secession on the national side of the new Euro coins, where it appears on the Austrian 50 eurocent piece.
The building is exceptionally eye-catching, in immaculate white (unless you visited in 1998 ? the centenary of its construction ? when it was red!) with the look of a Greek temple, the most outstanding feature being a delicate golden gilded globe. It was paid for by Karl...

Come here for "The Kiss"
Advantages: Very reasonable price, good Insights tour
Disadvantages:
...There is a great deal of Klimt, Schiele and Kokoschka on view here, but also some very noteworthy Classical period art, and some impressionist paintings. For English speakers the "English Insights" tour is recommended, especially if you are shortly short on time but want a good overview of the collections, and takes place at 11am on weekdays. As with most museums in Vienna, this one is shut on Monday. The admission ATS60 - GBP3 or ATS40 with an ISIC card is a snip as you see some of the great works of the expressionist era. There are a lot of portraits in the Romanticism section which can be glossed over unless you are a particular fan of portrait painting, and plenty of Klimt and Schiele to satiate the expression fans....

A mystery item
Advantages: This might be a voyage of discovery
Disadvantages: You might not realise the bigger picture
...This op is in response to a guestbook message from SMAGGS76
The following clues not only give visual hints about this object but also even spell it out, although I?d be surprised if that many people get this one.
My first can be found in THE KISS which is also a sign of UNCHASTITY
My second is indicative of my form being both SENSUOUS and EROTIC
My third is in CAULIFLOWER but not surprisingly in LAUREL
My fourth can be found in both the NINETEENTH CENTURY and the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY
My fifth boasts LUMINARIES but the MOVEMENT as a whole doesn?t
My sixth could grace VER SACRUM but wouldn?t appear in the YELLOW BOOK
My seventh is in FRIEZE and also in KLIMT
My eighth is in TORTOISE and also in PLANT POT
My ninth and last can be found in BEETHOVEN yet also in MODERN ART
My whole is in the First, but is close to the Fourth...

Lovers entwined in a tangled mist
Advantages: A personal poem from me at a certain time in my life
Disadvantages: None
...I wrote this short poem/story when I was in A-Level English. I have lost the original but can remember most of it.
It is written to the painting by Gustav Klimt - The Kiss
Lovers entwined in a tangled mist
Him holding her, her holding him
Cherishing the moment they now share
Reaching, Touching, Feeling
If only this would last
Her face, so gentle, so pure
His body, so strong, so hard
The flowers that cover them
Hiding them from the world
For only they know the truth
The vines wrapping around their feet
Holding them together so their love cannot be broken
If only the mist would clear
The kiss could be real
The love would shine
But the mist pushes them down
Deeper and deeper, trying to push them apart
It is only in their dreams
That the mist does not exist
What can they do but dream?
This is not...

This kiss is deadly!
Advantages: Great front cover
Disadvantages: chapters too long, predictable, not very cheerful
...I first noticed this book advertised on a hoarding at a London train station. It took my eye because on the front cover was Gustav Klimt?s painting of ?The Kiss?. Golden and brown hues showing the latest Danielle Steel book up there on the big board.
I wasn?t going to pay the RRP of £6.99 and by pure fortune, while it was still in the book charts, I found it in hard back version in a charity shop for a mere English pound! Well at that price it was too rude not to buy it!
I must mention at this stage I used to read Ms Steel?s books when I was a teenager (a few years ago now!). I went off them as I grew older and more cynical but hey, let?s give this one a go because it was a cheapie.
So the story. Well it features Isabelle, a beautiful (of course) French lady who lives in Paris with her husband Gordon and their two...

The Munch Museum - It's a Scream
Advantages: Comprehensive and well presented exhibtion of Munch's varied catalogue
Disadvantages: None, unless you don't like galleries
...me very much of Klimt?s painting because of the very sensuous form of the subjects, while some other prints reminded me of the work of Alphonse Mucha with their flowing, almost organic lines like tendrils. My favourite works, though, were the colour seascapes and beach scenes painted on the Baltic coast? Munch has used colour to great effect in creating the seaside light.
As I failed to take in my camera, I would recommend taking a look at the museum?s website which shows many of the paintings and prints in the collection. At the time of visiting, the museum was staging its summer exhibition. As the collection is so huge, some of the paintings are rotated so that frequent or return visitors can see something different. I felt that the exhibition covered Munch?s catalogue very well and presented a good cross selection to demonstrate...

"How not to decorate" Romanian style
Advantages: Attractive and interesting attraction, good value for money, don't have to pay to see grounds
Disadvantages: Decor quite tasteless in parts
...the top with lavish elements such as a hall of mirrors and the dining room ceiling which is clad in leather from Cordoba; to have such design elements these days would be construed as tacky and tasteless and to some extent the decor here is too. However there are plenty of worthwhile things to see such as the collections of paintings and ceramics. I was very interested to see the Florentine Room because I had heard it contained a work by Gustav Klimt: it's a copy of an earlier work by Vasari and Klimt reproduced it here on the ceiling when he was still an art student. I was not disappointed.
My favourite room was the Turkish room: the walls are covered with silk tapestries while ornate footstools and chairs are upholstered with more vivid red needlework and Anatolian copper work urns form the centrepieces on the tables. To say this was...

The first 4 episodes of an anime masterpiece
Advantages: Groundbreaking anime
Disadvantages: DVD extras are kept to a minimum
...as a means of disparity between the natural world and the human beings.
There are many imaginative moments in Elfen Lied, especially in the first vector. The several individuals and their respective feelings are made very clear throughout the entire series. You will be close to tears more than once, notably in the last episodes.
If you intend to watch the anime in English, the voices are well acted for the most part. The English subtitles for the original Japanese are excellent.
The closing titles fade in and out with J-pop (Japanese pop music), the norm for most anime titles. But the opening titles are another story altogether. The imagery is based on paintings from Gustav Klimt and features Lilium, an enchanting operatic suite by Kumiko Noma.
As far as the DVD goes, the "extras" section seems a bit superficial. You get...

Small, but perfectly formed hotel in Vienna
Advantages: Classy, comfortable, fantastic breakfast
Disadvantages: Not overly expensive, but the rates match how nice it is
..., the receptionist came out from behind the desk and gave us a tour of the hotel and then took us up to our room. It was a genuinely warm welcome and we felt very much at home.
The Room
I have to say, this was pretty special.
According to the reviews I've read of the hotel all the standard rooms are well furnished with arty touches, but as it was a special occasion, we selected (for a small premium) one of their recently renovated rooms, design by Matteo Thun. The design is inspired by that period of Vienna, around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, where art and music flourished. The culture of cafés and concert halls that pushed the boundaries in art (think Klimt and then Schiele) are the inspiration.
The room had a high ceiling, silver/black flock wall paper, an elaborate chandelier, silver curtains, red velvet bedstead...
