I have recently found one of the most useful tools imaginable on the Internet (aside form Ciao of course). The site in question is www.multimap.co.uk. Ok I hear you say, not the most stimulating of sites, BUT wait hang on there a minute, can ANYONE reading this HONESTLY say they have never been lost? Unsure of where they are going?? No I didn’t think so!
As some of you will know I work as part of the district nursing team which involves travelling to people’s houses. The team I work for covers a huge area, and often I am at a loss as to where I need to be. Enter multimap.co.uk – a site I rely on and refer to, as do many of my colleagues, who phone me to find out where places are.
The site provides street maps and travel directions for the UK, Ok so any street map will tell you that – BUT enter the postcode of the place you seek, and it will show you the map, with the specific area pinpointed! Try it with your own postcode if you like. You then have option to pan North, South, East or west also to zoom in further if possible, or zoom out to see the wider map.
You can also enter your starting postcode, and destination postcode and the site will calculate quickest and shortest route for you. These routes are extremely accurate and include one way streets! The site does state that the maps/directions are only to be used as a guide though – but I have found them to be 100% every time.
You don’t even have to know the postcode of your destination, just the street name and town. If you enter for example ‘high street, derby’ the returned search will bring up 30+ destinations, it will give you ALL the addresses on High street Derby, including in some instances the house name, simply click the one you want and hey presto, you have a pinpointed location, right on your screen!
World maps – click on the area of the world you are interested in, or search for a particular place, region or country. Once you have the map of the area, zoom in and you can find any street in the world!
Ariel Photos – these are limited at the moment to major cities in Great Britain. Clicking on one of the cities you are given the Ariel photo of it (surprisingly!). This is not a feature that I ever use, but I am sure it would be interesting and useful to some people out there. The zoom feature is pretty good, as you are able to see good detail – including cars! Although it fell short of actually reading the numberplates!
The site also gives and interactive London tube map – again not something I have had cause to use, but could come in handy should I be planning a trip to London at any time.
Local information is supplied too, click on the place you are looking for i.e. pub, restaurant, golf club, music venue even houses for sale, and where you would like the site to search i.e. Ilkeston. It will bring up a list of houses for sale in that area! (I wish I had known about this when we were looking for a house!)
The feature I use the most is the first mentioned street finder. It is especially handy at finding places on new estates and places in the middle of nowhere especially farms and the like.
All in all a very handy little tool for anyone and everyone, that is simple easy to use and best of all its FREE!!!

Yes, this is a super site. As a sideline to work, I do mystery shopping and often have to get myself to unknown suburban locations. Multimap comes up trumps every time AND is more accurate in locating by postcode than Autoroute. This is one of a handful of website where I would willingly pay a fee in order to print out the map, and yet it's free!!!!!

I use Multimap.com all the time and am pleased that you have written an Op. on it, it is so useful. I have the job of progaramming drivers to go out on deliveries all the time and print off maps and directions for them. A well written Op., but yours seem to be so well written anyway.
