Yes yes, Multimap is very good for maps and the other authors are right in their praise of this part of the service. Unfortunately I have to disagree with everyone else and say that the directions on this service are basically useless!!! I feel that I am justified in saying this because I got lost in the depths of the countryside round Guildford. I was late for an appointment by a mere 2 hours. (Sadly this is no exaggeration).
There are two parts to the direction service, an overview which gives a list of the instructions and a step by step part which give a small map of each stage. Both which are equally useless.
Enough of my whinging. Let me point out the basic problems of this part of the service. (In order of importance/irritation)
General/overview mode 1. Roundabout directions are given as "Bear Left". I understand that this is because to get off a roundabout you do in fact "bear Left". BUT IT DOESN'T TELL YOU WHICH EXIT TO "BEAR LEFT" ON.
2. It uses mileage to navigate and not in a particularly intuitive way. It will give the mileage of the stage, and the mileage from the start. I find this incredibly difficult to navigate with. For example, it difficult to travel 1.23 miles then turn right. I can take the 6th right though
3. Landmarks are not included. I can understand that on a site this comprehensive they will be unable to tell me to go past the pub, but when it does not include basic road features, e.g. traffic lights, crossroads, forks, roundabouts, motorway junctions etc, I am inclined to get a little peeved.
4. The maps at this level tend to be quite big
5. The time to the destination is usually wrong.
Step by Step 1. You cannot chose which step to go from. For example, I lived in Watford for a while and can find my way to the M1 easily. With the step by step mode, I cannot skip straight to step 10 where I join the M1. I have to go through the first 10 steps. You are unable to ask for directions just from the M1, because you HAVE to put in an address
The step by step does give you more of an idea of the route than the overview. You can use it to work out information like where roundabouts are and which turning to take, but this can be very time consuming.
On the plus side it does take into account (or tries to), things like no entry and one way roads, which conventional maps won't tell you.
After my detour around Guildford I really don't recommend this part
