I hate annoying people. You know what I mean; people who walk too slowly infront of you on a crowded pavement, someone who sits next to you on a train then proceeds to open up a broadsheet newspaper in your face, people who think they're naturally funny purely because they can remember every line from the 2nd series of 'The Office'. All pretty horrendous and every example a good reason why abolishing the death penalty might not have been such a good ... ...British people than someone who has found a holiday cheaper than themselves.
With that in mind you can imagine my trepidation as myself and my girlfriend boarded mytravel flight MYT049 from Birmingham to Gran Canaria having paid just £101 each for a return flight and a week's accommodation thanks to the auction section within mytravel's website (www.mytravel.com). All pretty horrendous and every example a good reason why abolishing the death penalty might not have been such a good idea, but nothing incurs the wrath of the majority of British people than someone who has found a holiday cheaper than themselves.

The website is an affiliate of Airtours and the majority of the holidays advertised in the auction section are part of their Sundeals packages which usually consist of cheap, late, but not last, minute deals to popular package holiday locations including the Med., Florida, Mexico, Jamaica etc.
There is an option of searching for location, departure airport, dates of holiday, length of stay, and price range. Obviously the more flexible you are, the better deal you can get. However, I was pretty rigid in my conditions in that I wanted to fly from Birmingham to the Canaries from between the 6-8 March for 1 week and yet I still managed to get a fantastic deal.
I would advise you plan in advance as much as possible when using this website, prepare for disappointment and don't get carried away! I started searching for holidays from about 6 weeks before I wanted to depart with a maximum price of £120 per person (not including booking fees, taxes and any extras) and I made several unsuccessful bids for holidays before getting this one. When you find you have been outbid by someone else then the temptation is to bid again and again (the reason the website can remain profitable), but resist that urge and stay within your agreed maximum price before you started bidding. Provided you have allowed plenty of time to bid for holidays you will get plenty more opportunities.
A lot of holidays start bidding at £1 each, with bidding increments rising by £20 each time. From experience it is unrealistic to expect to pay less than £100 each for a package deal, but occassionally this does happen! Proxy bidding is a great way of ensuring that you do not get outbid without placing your maximum possible bid first. In my case when I first bid for the holiday it was only £41 each, but I informed mytravel that I was willing to pay up to £120 each should someone else subsequently bid for the holiday. Proxy bidding simply means that the website will place a bid on your behalf up to your maximum price should a counter bid come in for the same holiday from someone else. This was vital in my case as someone placed a bid of £100 each at the VERY last minute of the auction which would have meant I would have lost the bid if I hadn't had Proxy bidding.
The price includes return flights and accommodation (often not allocated until arrival), but doesn't include airport transfers (about £15pp each), optional in-flight meals (about £10-£15pp each) or booking fees (about £10pp each). Girlfriend and I opted to make sandwiches and hire a car which meant that the inflight meal and transfer charges were avoided.
If you choose to buy your holiday through mytravel auctions you will not get the lap of luxury - the flights are cramped, but tolerable and the accommodation is clean, but basic. If, however, you are on a really tight budget and don't fancy another weekend in a drab caravan park in Rhyl or you just fancy a cheap getaway before your main summer holidays you really can't get any better than this.
We got flight, accommodation, car hire and insurance in a island that boasts year-round sunshine (average 28 degrees C when we were there) for £165 each. Don't you just hate annoying people?!
Advantages: Cheap, Good Website, Lots of Information Disadvantages: Some holidays are AOA
I have been using My Travel.com for two years now and have successfully bid on holidays 3 times and got a flight once. I first came across My Travel when it was called Lateescapes.com and was looking for a holiday to Benidorm.
I searched the Auction pages and found a holiday to the Costa Blanca, named selfcatering at the Albir Gardens about a couple of miles out of Benidorm. I successfully bid £220 for this self catering holiday in June 2001 that ... ...and transfers, but not booking fee and aviation tax which is £10 and £7 respectivly.
The same day a person from My Travel telephoned me to confirm details, payment information and inform me that the tickets would be despached shortly.
The next time that I needed a holiday I went back on to My Travel and found a named half board to Salou for £230 which was £115 each for a week. I needed to find the insurance as this wasn't included this time but ...

Advantages: CHEAP Disadvantages: DON'T KNOW WHERE YOUR GOING
A few weeks ago I was sat here looking for a very cheap holiday. I just wanted a week in the sun. I searched through all the different holiday sites, these holidays are all very good if you can fly from London, but if you want to fly from Glasgow it is a very different situation. Travel companies don’t realize people live in Scotland and go on holiday just like everyone else, but that’s another story.
Back to my point, I found MYTRAVEL.COM, it is ... ...a search facility on the first page allowing you to search in specific categories for example when you whant to leave, how many people and where yopu want to go. The site has everything you would expect a travel agent to have, sun holidays, ski holidays, city breaks. They have a holiday referance section, giving info on money, weather, airport guides ect. i spent the morning going through all the different holidays from Glasgow. I came across their ...

Advantages: Great Interface, best package website by miles Disadvantages: Tendency to crash
...the main package operators websites, mytravel.com is by far the best. The search engine is streets ahead of any others, choose where you want to go and when and it gets straight to the point and gives you prices. The number of other websites where you have to navigate through page after page of stuff before you get a price is mindblowing. I have booked my last 2 holidays through this website, both times getting prices that no high street travel agent ... ...as well as some of these are spectacular, having been quoted £300 for a week in June each, I found a holiday in Lanzarote for only £169 each, named and everything, none of this allocated on arrival nonsense you find elsewhere. The only downside is it does crash every now and again, but persevere and you get there in the end. Highly Recommended. ...

Advantages: Clear and informative website. Extremely low cost. Staff very helpful. Disadvantages: Don't always know where you are going and not able to go from nearest airport.
I couldn't believe it 5 weeks self catering in Portugal for £51 each. We didn't know which resort we would be in never mind which apartments. So we were a little aprehensive. Would we be staying in a hut on the beach. But no when we arrived at our apartments there on the wall by the door was a plaque with 4 stars on it. We were so surprised. We thought there must be a catch. What was the room going to be like. The Rooms were great a really decent ... ...equipped and lovely and clean. The furniture in the rooms was a good quality. The maids came in every day to clean. All this for £51 each for 5 weeks. This was just after 9-11 but even now you can get holidays at a snip. You need to visit the web site regularly and you can hit on some real bargains. You have to remember not to bid too early leave it until the last minute and then bid the £20 extra plus £1 or £2 over that so that if anyone bids the ...
