I discovered napster (www.napster.com) on the advice of a friend, who like me used to trawl the web looking for mp3s. Napster is a program that connects all the users around the world, sharing their mp3 connection. You can search for a song, and then choose which user to download it from. I found the software to be easy to use and also that a very large number of tracks were available for download. It should be remembered that most of the tracks available on napster are copyright, and so should be used only as a preview to buying the CD.
One of the best parts of napster is the ability to add users to a hotlist - this enables you to add users who are fast, or who share the same taste in music that you do. Napster is only really viable if you have at least an ISDN connection to the internet, since song downloads can be quite slow. Also, people with modems tend to disconnect halfway through a download, and you have to start again. As a whole, the napster network can also be somewhat difficult to connect to, however, once connected it does usually remain so. However, napster is an ideal program for those with a fast, permanent connection to the internet, and I would thoroughly recommend it, especially for rarer tracks.
