I joined neopets about 3 years ago after my boyfriend told me about the site (one of his mates told him), as soon as he told me about it I went to the site to have a look, it looked ok. I thought i'll give it a week and see how good the site is and you can do, so I did and I am still playing now.
Sign Up When you sign up you have to select an age range, if your child is signing up and you are helping them with the process please note that if you select an age range below 18 or older then the child has to have a parent sign a permission form which can be found on the site, you print the form out and either post it of to neopets or fax it to them, until neopets receive this permission form your child will only be able to do so much on the site, they wont be able to receive neomail from people which is actually kept on the site in your neopets account so you can read their neomail to make they are OK on the site. When signing up under the 18 or over option they ask you the following questions (I am assuming the questions are the same whatever the age range) E-mail address (required), street & state (optional), country & postcode (required), date of birth & gender (required). On the next page you choose your password, then you have to wait for a activation code which arrives in your
e-mail within second of signing up, once you have clicked the activation link your ready to start playing with your neopets.
Starting Off When you start you go and adopt a neopets, you can’t do much on the site without one, you can have upto 4 neopets on your account, there are lots of species to choose from, you have 46 pets to choose from, and you may have trouble choosing a name as most original names will have already been chosen but you can try a weird name or something.
You have your neopet(s) Now the fun starts, now you have your neopet(s) you can feed them and give them toys to play with, first of you need to go to your inventory and get your newbie pack, its not much but it helps, you can either use your newbie pack or sell each item in your shop (more about that in a minute), your pet will come fully fed so you needn’t worry about feeding your neopet(s) just yet. You start off with 500NP (NP=neopoints=currency in the neopian world), you can earn more as you go along, you should go to the shops and sign up for a bank account because there are ghosts that can and will steal your money, you get 30NP for signing up for a bank account, it asks for an address but you don’t put in your real address it is just a made up address like 21 Neopian Court, Neopia Village, Neopia; once you have your bank account put any NP (should be 530NP by now) in your account. Now for your newbie pack, if you decide not to keep the items you can sell them in your shop (you have to create one first) creating a shop will cost you 250NP, but you will get this back easily. When you have your shop you need a name and description, you can make this basic for now, make sure you pick a name that describes what you want to sell, you can change this at any time, the same as the description, you don’t need to put a lot just a quick welcome message of some sort, you can go into more detail with this as and when you want. Now that you have your shop you can put those items from the newbie pack that you don’t want into your shop, to do this you click on the item in your inventory and a pop up window will open, select Put into your shop in the drop down list and it will put it there, then you need to go back to your shop and pick a price for the item, the best way to choose a price is check the shop wizard, go to shops and then on the bar at the top click the wizards hat, then type in the name of the item and search, when you have the lowest price go back to your shop and put the item up for the same price, don’t worry it will sell.
Now what can you do? Now you can go and play some games to earn neopoints, when starting off I would advise playing the games that are FREE to save you some NP, put it in the bank every time you get over 100NP, that way you won’t find yourself being turned over by the ghosts for the NP you just played hard at getting. As you get money together you can buy things to sell in your shop, upgrade your shop to fit more items in or use to play other games, which may payout, more NP than you pay to play the game. I would advise buying some food and putting it in your safety deposit box, so you have it when it comes to feeding your pet, you can join guilds (clubs), some giveaway FREE items to new members and you can also earn rewards from the guild, there are many guilds out there, some people have created them as a fan base type club for certain neopet(s), pick one you will be comfortable in, the more members there are means the more will be going in the guild, you could always create one if you can't find one for you, but you may have to advertise hard to get members to join unless you create on that is upto date like one for a new favourite group, artist or whatever you choose.
You can earn neopoints other ways, referring others (you can also earn items), or signing up for sponsors, doing quests or getting job coupons. As you navigate through the site you will find that it will say "Something Has Happened", sometimes this could be that you have found an item or something was just passing by or it could be that some ghosts have just stole some NP or an item.
There is also a money tree, where you can go and try and get items that people have discarded or that the ghosts have stole from others and put there.
There are many places in neopia I would advise going each day to get FREEBIES and there are also some good games which are useful to play everyday, if you need any help at all you can neomail me by typing the_big_collector in the search box on the left hand side of the neopets site, and then clicking neomail, you can aslo add me to your neofriends list if you want.
Anyway I don’t think I can help much more than I have, if I have that is. Although I can say that they are always adding to the site. The neopets care cute and now they can have their own pets too.

Wow, that sounds a right laugh. I would love a real pet, but work comes first, and I wouldn't want to leave a dog on it's own.

Great op, I used to have the Mopy goldfish, that was until I returned from holiday to find it dead. Sounds like fun, might give it a try, thanks. Andy.

This sounds great for people who enjoy this kind of thing but for me, it sounds like a massive waste of time, difference in opinion I suppose, Chris.
Advantages: free, easy to use, lots of games and activities, safe for children Disadvantages: can be so addictive that you forget about the outside world
