Let me just begin saying thank you to karenuk, as it was after reading her intriguing opinion on neopets.com that I decided to check it out. Little did I know that these neopets were capable of brainwashing me into thinking that I was some kind of god, controlling there hunger and fun and wisdom etc, which has made me sit up night after night, caring for and training my neopets in order to reach there full potential. I have neglected my home, my work and my family; I have been more interested in my Ixi, Zafara, Elephante and Pteri! I’ve built them a shop so I can buy and sell to their advantage, I’ve built them a home which I can decorate just to their liking, I have in fact spent the last two and half months being completely obsessed with four man-made technological graphics and I have been dumb enough to think of them as actual pets. So, as I was saying THANKYOU VERY MUCH INDEED karenuk!

So, in order to warn you away from the site I am of course going to have to write you an ultra-informative opinion so there is absolutely no chance you will go anywhere near it!
The home page itself looks fairly innocent there is a big starry logo at the top and then to the left is a quick link bar in a orange background, the links are Pet Central, Create a pet, neomail, world, explore, chat, games, shops, news, and login/out choices. There is also a search box underneath and your name (after you’ve registered) with your active pets name and the number of neopoints you have ‘in your hand’ to spend. The links on the right of the page have ways of earning neopoints quickly (although some of them are just for users in the US) Its always worth taking a look, another note to make is that on the homepage there is a date and time and its certainly not the same as mine – so I think it’s the US, but the time matters, I’ll tell you why later.
The home page also includes news flashes to do with the site, new games to watch out for and just general info that the average neopets addict requires on a daily basis.

After you’ve registered on the neopets website you will be presented with the option of creating a pet, you have lots of different species to choose from, then what sex it is and then give it a colour and a name – there are very few names to choose from and many people end up having numbers at the end of there names. There characteristics are generated randomly and its just pot luck I’m afraid, these things include health, mood, hunger, strength, defence, move, intelligence, all of these can be improved in one way or another, but I like those ways are for you to find out by yourself. My neopets are Jazmex the red Ixi, Zafardous the blue Zafara, Kaitecor the yellow Elephante and Wockyaspinall the red Pteri. You may think I was lucky with the names, well I was actually, except for the obvious, however Wockyaspinall was originally a red Wocky (It wasn’t a very inventive name I know) and one day she played with a toy that she shouldn’t have and it turned her into a Pteri…but that’s another story. Anyway where was I, oh yes, if the name thing really niggles you – it did me too – then you can always check out the neopian pound and have a look at all the pets that have been abandoned, there are a great number of those that have pretty decent names, they do cost money however, so I suppose it just depends on how badly you get sucked into the whole thing – I simply could not cope with the pets crying in front of me, and combined with my desire for names without numbers on the end I adopted all three! So those are the ways to obtain your pets to begin with.

Pet Central is the first link on the aforementioned bar on the homepage. From here you can access your pats statistics, abilities, trophies etc you can also write up a description of your pet, which other users will see if they search for them. You have access to each of your pets homepage (yes they each have there own homepage!) which you can edit etc if you wanna check mine out by the way the links are as follows: http://petpages.neopets.com/~Jazmex or at the end you could put anyone of my other pets names! You can also get to your neohome from here and start building it, enter a beauty contest, pick up tips on how to feed you neopets and what foods to eat etc. This is very much a general information page.

The 'create a pet' page is obvious actually, this is where you either create or adopt a pet – You can have a maximum of four pets at any one time.

The neomail is for other users to contact you regarding auctions, guilds, battles etc – you can block users mailing you if you don’t like them, but to be honest most of the users are kids so there isn’t much in the way of bad mails. You can make other users your neofriends, and you have your own diary and you can send neopet greetings to other people from here also.

From the world link you are taken to a page where you can access statistics of the neopets site, a how-to-draw your neopet section, warnings about neopet hackers and much more useful information.

I know you’re getting bored now, so I’m going to get into the nitty gritty of the site before curiosity takes you there instead and then you’ll disappear and we’ll never see you again!

The explore icon takes you to a map of the whole of (known) neopia, the links will takes you to all the discovered worlds so far such as terror mountain, tyrannia, meridell, haunted woods, neopia central, virtua pets space station, krawk island, faeirieland, lost desert and Mystery island. All these places are huge and have access to games and shops and markets and absolute neo-musts like the tombola and the neopian wheel of fortune. There is also a secret monster hidden somewhere on the map, but I wouldn’t disturb him if I were you.

Overall the site is brilliantly laid out it just takes a day or two because its so big, the graphics are brilliant, the only real bad thing about the site is that its highly addictive (unless you’ve got more sense) and there’s little point to it all, except getting tearful where you get an email from your neopet telling you’re the best owner ever! I know it all sounds sad and it probably is – but if you’re a Sims fan – which I very much am – then you’ll love this too.

If even after all this warnings you still want to visit this site then I can only suggest that you phone all your friends and family and apologise in advance, get your sick note ready because you won’t be seen for a very long while.

If your curiosity has been subdued and you can resist the temptation then stop reading now…because now I can tell you all what I find so addictive about the site…

I lurrrrve my pets they are soooo cute and I like finding them really unusual things to eat around the world, the more unusual the better like eel burgers and toenail soup! I love building them a home and furnishing it, I am such an interior designer I really am, but my favourite thing are the auctions, I generally get bargains which is how I have built up my shop – nowhere near as big as some users who have been on the site for years!!!! To be honest if you’re good at shopping for a bargain, you’re a big kid (or a little one), love cute things, and playing games and just generally escaping your own little world then the site was made for you.

But I have to get out, really I do – I just can’t bring myself to give up my little pets.

Oh and by the way - its completely free!
