Review of Movies of the 90 - Jurgen Muller by rayliu

Advantages: Read about all the films that made the 90's, Loads of movie photos, Great reference guide, Well published and cheap
Disadvantages: Some bizarre inclusions and some major exclusions!

...stop me nattering and criticising movies for the most part of the day. Yes I’m one of these film geeks that each office environment has at least one. So on my leaving day, what else did they buy me apart from a book on my favourite topic; films. Knowing I mostly grew up with films of the 90’s they appropriately bought me Movies of the 90’s published by Taschen. I must admit, I’ve never been fond of film guides, often finding them way too littered ...
...more and more obsolete. Movies of the 90’s is different. It’s not littered with thousands of pages of short descriptions about entirely every single film since the beginning of cinema. This book doesn’t have every single film that was made in the 90’s either. Instead it concentrates on the films that made the 90’s. It’s the films we will remember in a decade’s time or the films that were inspirational. Having a quick glance at the back cover gives ... Read review

Before Austin Powers
Review of Sixties British Cinema - Robert Murphy by Mauri

Advantages: Informative and well written
Disadvantages: Very detailed, assumes some knowledge of british cinema

The sixties produced a great many changes in British society and these were clearly reflected in British filmmaking of the time. Just as in music and the arts cinema was affected by the liberating effects of more permissive attitudes to sex, drugs and morality. Films and filmmakers became more experimental and the boundaries set by the censors were constantly tested. 'Sixties British Cinema' published by the BFI (British Film Institute) and written/edited ...
...the course of the book sixties films are looked at from various aspects. Murphy starts first by looking at the state of British Cinema in the 50's and highlighting the stagnation in ideas and innovation that pervaded the films of the period. The beginnings of change can actually be traced to the 1959 film 'Look Back In Anger' and then the later 'Room At The Top' (1960), which was a forerunner of the later grittier and morally less well-defined British ... Worst film ever!
Review of The Avengers - Toby Miller by beenzner4

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: poor acting, poor story line, just poor!!

...has too be one of the most dissapointing i've seen in a long time. The acting is awfull and the story line is nothing short of pathetic. The only intersting part was a cameo by shaun ryder from the happy monday's and black grape. I am suprised that sean connery would have got involved in a movie as poor as this. It wasn't worth 35p nether mind the £3.50 i spent on renting the video. All concerned should stay well clear of this film. Its an ... Read review
