A Particular Friendship, Oasis Audiobook
Review of A Particular Friendship - Dirk Bogarde by
cat22-ciao
Advantages: On cassette tape, read by the author himself
Disadvantages: 6 cassettes may become muddled by a blind user
...starts off in England, in a sunny garden, and promises to biograph Bogarde's every journey through the 'Movie' world (although I had previously guessed that I 'knew' it already). Mrs X, the lady to whom the letters are addressed, is not immediately revealed and the book promises that she and Bogarde never met. You will find out pieces about Mrs X through the one-sided letters; the lack of absolute knowledge of the content of the letters, received ... ...listener individually; with each new reply. My first thoughts on the book had been that it would be quite sufficient to listen to odd letters, but tape 1 proved to me that it deserves to be listened to in its entirety. It made me want to find out more about Bogarde's life, contemporaries and about the films he appeared in.

Staying Alive in the Andes
Review of Alive: The True Story of the Andes Survivors - Piers Paul Read by
DoubleFantasy11
Advantages: A detailed account of survival that doesn't lapse into sentimentality
Disadvantages: Graphic descriptions of, um, bowel movements
I wasn't alive in 1972, so there was never a movement when I discovered that 16 survivors had been found from a plane crash 10 weeks earlier in one of the harshest territories on Earth. Instead, I've just heard scraps about the Fairchild, a chartered flight from the Uruguayan air force carrying a rugby team and a few others - 45 in total - crashing in the Andes while on their way to Chile and the survivors being forced to eat the dead in order to ... ...must have been - or how miraculous the escape of the remaining 16 was.
My expectations were a little subdued when I read that the book had won a Thomas More Medal for its contribution to Catholic literature and that some of the survivors felt that "the faith and friendship which inspired them in the cordillera do not emerge from these pages". Read's introduction also makes it clear that this is no work of fiction: he did consider 'embellishing' ...

Elegant and Enigmatic
Review of Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit - Sean Hepburn Ferrer by
KarenUK
Advantages: Beautiful photos, revealing, informative, sensitive
Disadvantages: None
...1960s. One of these is Audrey Hepburn, who I loved when I watched My Fair Lady on TV as a child. I was looking for a biography to buy about her, so looked through Amazon and Ebay for something suitable, as I wanted to learn more about her life.
When I saw the front cover of this book, I knew I had to buy it. The picture is stunning – a young Audrey with short hair and a pink blouse, looking back towards the camera. Then I saw it was written by her ... ...bought Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit by Sean Hepburn Ferrer from Ebay for £5.99 (£9.49 with postage), but it is also available from Amazon for £9.12. Sean has also written a second book on his mother called The Audrey Hepburn Treasures, which I hope to buy soon.
I read An Elegant Spirit and loved it. It is such a warm account of Audrey’s life and the memories her son shares really do give an insight into her as a person – and as a mother. While ...

A compelling read
Review of Big Brother: The Official Unseen Story - Jean Ritchie by
Saintly
Advantages: Great detail and excellent to read
Disadvantages: The first chapter, very dull
...of summer 2000 that was Big Brother then this book will be a sure fire hit with you. It's called 'The Official Unseen Story' and it certainly isn't lying. This book is the complete story of Big Brother. It includes details on each of the eleven contestants, how the house was built, the selection process and the best bit, the week by week journal of what happened in that very famous house. Quite a nice extra is the professionals' view of the psychology ...
