About 2 weeks ago I returned from a trip to China with my family. We stayed at the 5* Shangri La hotel in Beijing, and it was absolutely incredible. Upon arrival (to a large glass fronting with revolving doors and more than 5 doormen), car doors were opened, bags were taken from us, and we were given a slip that would enable our luggage to be taken up once we had checked in. ...bothered to learn chinese). Upon checkin, the staff (2 young girls and a man), were curteous and polite, and even went to the point of joking when a family member said he wouldnt take the lift because he had a phobia. All good humoured and friendly people. Once checked in, the ever helping staff actually escorted that family member all the way up the 11 flights of stairs to our room, before checking he had made his way to our room, before promptly ... Advantages: beautiful gardens free to visit, good location, very clean and polite staff
Disadvantages: expensive internet

...hotel, it is named the grand view gardens because out the back is a huge garden which was infact used for a television show in china! It is free for those who stay in the hotel but if your not staying in there you have to pay. We spent a good couple of hours walking round it all. there is a huge man made lake in the middle with lots of trees and little chinese buildings and ornaments around. There is also a small animal 'zoo' which was quite nice. ...
...quite sad though because all the animals were so hungry and the staff sell food to visitors so you can feed them - so we did - and most of it! it was gone in a few seconds. Definalty worth visiting the gardens as they area beautiful, and in the evening there are shows. Disadvantages: Not the best location

We stayed at the Radisson SAS Hotel Beijing for 6 nights on our travel to Beijing in March 2003. We stayed there from march 15th. The hotel itself doesn’t have a great location. It is located next to ring 3 on the northeast of Beijing. But this was not really a big issue because there were always taxis outside the hotel and it was easy to get into the center of town. ...to walk for about 15 minutes to get to Liufang station. From here you can get to the loop line and then switch to Line 1. The lobby of the hotel is standard. I had the pleasure of staying in this hotel when I travelled to Beijing in July, for a week. This hotel was great. Our rooms were furnished with many accessories such as hair dryers; not that we used them, TV, radio; there was English radio there, air conditioning, thank god, a mini bar and a safe. There were three restaurants in the hotel, and a massage parlour and a beauty salon. One disadvantage was there was no pool. But the views were excellent, ...
...thing that did restrict the views was pollution, not that a lot but still, but that was nothing to do with the hotel! It was situated near many western restaurants (in case you get sick of Chinese food) and the people at the desk will ring up and order pizza for you to take to your rooms for no more than it costs to buy! As you walk into the lobby, you assume that the hotel will be very plush. My husband and I stayed for 4 nights and found the room to be very dated and we upgraded. I would not class this hotel as 4 star by European standards. Very good value for money though. The standard of English speaking staff was very good.
