A Modern Hero
Review of Barefoot Soldier - Johnson Beharry, Nick Cook by
scuba_angel
Advantages: gives an insight in to the Iraq situation
Disadvantages: none
This book is one which the women on the rearparty forums recommended as one to read, particularly for those those partners have been to Iraq as a way to give them an idea of what those men (and women) had to deal with.
The book opens telling us about one of the incidents for which he was awarded the VC, then flicks back in time to his childhood in Grenada, though at first you dont know this. The imaginings of a chidl who loves cars and pretends ... ...of his childhood and family situation gives you an overall feel that this boy had a hard childhood, yet he didnt seem to realise this at the time, constantly looking on the brightside and giving himself something to aim for. He didnt like school and rather than just skiving off and doing nothing he taught himself skills which would allow him to claim a trade.
During his childhood period you find that his reasons for not liking school include that ...

Being Jordan, her life in her own words.
Review of Being Jordan - Katie Price by
Behindcitylights
Advantages: Easy to read, She doesn't hold anything (and i mean anything) back
Disadvantages: She does sound very bitter when describing certain ex's..
After reading her debut novel "Angel" which i (surprisingly) enjoyed i thought i'd try her autobiography after someone reccomended it to me. Now this certainly isn't an intellectuals dream but for those who want something easy and interesting to read it's perfect.
For anyone who's read her novel (and i really reccomend it, even friends who despise Jordan praise it) you will see simlarities, and her life is dramatic (abusive relationships, drink ... ...really interesting read.
In this book she's witty and down to earth, and its amazing to hear just what she's been through, wether you admire her or cant stand her you will definitely sympathise with all that she's been through, and you will certainly be wanting to know what happens next... ...

Everyone needs a mum like Betty.
Review of Book. Love, Ellen. - Betty Degeneres by
JulieHaycraft
Advantages: Enlightening opinion from a mothers point of view
Disadvantages: Couldn't help but wonder....Is she on the band wagon ?
A brief synopsis.
Love Ellen by Betty Degeneres is a true story of how a mother dealt with her famous daughter coming out as a lesbian. What made me want to read this book ?
Personal experience. When I came out to my mum 13 years ago the response wasn't great and it still isn't after all this time. I thought maybe reading this book would help me understand why. The result was in fact the opposite. How it is written.
The book is written from Betty's ... ...is semi diarised and autobiographical. What it's about.
It briefly looks at Betty's childhood and upbringing. Explaining some traditional family values and how she was brought up to understand how a 'normal' life should be.
Very quickly the book moves on to how Ellen told her mum she was gay and the initial response that she received. While it wasn't outwardly negative it was somewhat strained. The book then moves on to the acceptance Ellen received ...

Says It All.
Review of Growing Pains - Billie Piper by
charrrd
Advantages: Honest, compelling and good natured.
Disadvantages: Very sad in places.
I decided to read this book because i was curious to see what a 23 year old could possibly have to say about her life that fills a whole book. It cannot be denied that Billie Piper has done more in her time than most of her age, but it was not until i read this book that i understood just how much. I am not old enough to remember her as a popstar, infact the first i knew of her was in doctor who, but this book offers an incredibly honest and compelling ... ...with Billie, and the book made me laugh and cry in places. This book tells the story of an ordinary girl who was thrown in at the deep end and struggled to resurface for a long time. It is incredibly moving and i now understand why so many young celebrities end up in rehab. The book also contains a lot of pictures which enhance the experience, and just go to show that as long as you keep smiling, nobody suspects trouble. ...

Review of Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War - Anthony Swofford by
frkurt
Advantages: Rather blunt and honest in emotion
Disadvantages: The line between truth and exaggeration is a bit blurry...
'Jarhead' by Anthony Swofford is bound to make some people angry. A Marine sniper (STA) during Desert Storm I in the early 1990s, he recounts his experiences there with vivid emotion, weaving in his experiences of boot camp, adolescence, and civilian life after the Corps in the process. Swofford has a chip on his shoulder - something he'll most likely readily admit. He has a 'bad attitude', and in fact revels in it. One wonders if this is a product ... ...upbringing. At one point his mother, who never really liked the idea of her son being in the Marines, but who wouldn't stand in her son's way, said 'I lost my baby boy when you went to war.' She described Swofford as being sweet and gentle prior to that, and angry and unhappy afterwards. One wonders how much of a change is there - if one can take the stories at face value, this is the same boy who had a fist-fight with his father over going in the ...
