Advantages: discriptive,tragic, humourous and charming
Disadvantages: none
...the most disturbuing parts of Alan Bennetts life is read aloud by him. When assaulted in Italy,Alan, then realises how many of his birthdays have been spend either ill or in hospital. He relects on the tragedy of his life in a way that is totally unsurpassed and unique to him. Bennetts, way with words, his unique sense of humour and ability to turn darkness to light , makes this a fantastic audio book. Allows the listener a privilaged insight into ... ...a wonderful story, you feel honoured to be allowed to know so much about his life, and read from his own lips, makes his story all the more poignant. This is part 4 own his diaries and can be heard alone, but having heard and read all of his diary collection, it is a fitting sequel and would be well purchased alongside the others from his publishings. I can't find a bad word to say about this CD. Well reccommended!!!! ...

UPDATED!!! - Dying For A Sandwich
Review of Anorexic - Anna Paterson by
KarenUK
Advantages: A compelling read, informative, honest
Disadvantages: Disturbing and moving - but that's not necessarily a bad thing!
...will be dismissed by the anorexic voice. She even has her email address at the end, in case anyone wants to contact her.
The book has several full-page black and white photos in, which help to show you how she looked at each stage. From a beautiful, healthy young child, she becomes so thin you can see her bones sticking out. The photo of her at her thinnest is a disturbing one. This is also the cover image. For those that think all women’s breasts ... ...*
ANOREXIC (the incredible story of a young girl’s journey to Hell and back) by Anna Paterson – first published by Westworld International Limited in 2000. ISBN 0-9529215-2-9

P. S. I am now lending the book to my beautiful, curvy 13 ½ year old daughter who weighs herself far too often and worries about being ‘fat’.

Obscene wealth
Review of Desert Royal - Jean Sasson by
Wearsidelass
Advantages: Insight into a pampered life
Disadvantages: You could get sick of reading about the obscene wealth
...true life trilogy and buy Desert Royal by Jean Sasson. It can be quite confusing when purchasing this book because there is another title by Jean Sasson called Princess Sultana’s Circle which is, as I understand it, the American version of Desert Royal (or it could be vice versa!).
So, Desert Royal continues the story of the life of Princess Sultana and her family – her husband Kareem and her two daughters Maha and Amani.
As with the first two ... ...royal Saudis which is all due to the exploration of oil in Saudi Arabia.
When I first read Princess I was genuinely sympathetic towards Sultana but, after reading the trilogy, I do believe that she is just another pampered princess looking for a good cause to fight, albeit hers is a somewhat silent fight.
Sasson again writes in a style which helps the reader to visualise the pampered lifestyle of the princess and other Saudi royals. Let us not ...

An Extraordinary Family History
Review of Family Romance - John Lanchester by
suesie
Advantages: A compelling factual read
Disadvantages: Slight repetition in parts
...product of a very mundane family with only a minimal number of skeletons in our closets, I was hooked and ordered the title immediately.
The uncovering of this fact led Lanchester to a realisation of how little he actually knew about his parents’ lives and to a recognition that his upbringing had been permeated by his mother’s “ enquiry suppression field, in which there were things you couldn’t ask, psychic places you couldn’t go and wishes you ... ...hidden areas by means of family archival documents, interviews with family members and historical research makes for fascinating reading.
Lanchester traces his mother, Julia’s life from her Irish roots as the eldest of eight in a comparatively poor family in County Mayo, though her education to her entry as a postulant into a Roman Catholic order, her subsequent leaving of that order and training as a nurse , followed by her re-entry into holy orders ...

HAJJI'S IN THE TREES..TWELVE O'CLOCK....
Review of Generation Kill - Evan Wright by
Badger_Boy
Advantages: A gripping read that literally makes you feel as though you are under fire
Disadvantages: Will leave you shell shocked
...a defining event of this generation and was subsequently covered from every angle known to man to ensure that the 24 hour media were fed their pound of flesh so to speak. As a brief outline, in the first Gulf War, the then Commander in Chief of US forces in theatre General H. Norman Schwarzkopf believed that to keep the media onside you had to embrace them and as such the concept of embedded reporters was born. This followed on from the first Gulf ... ...Reconnaissance soldiers and the book Generation Kill is his story of racing into hostile territory in the back of an unarmoured Humvee, deprived of sleep, eating restricted rations and in the unsanitary conditions of combat.
Generation Kill pulls no punches and commences with Evan Wright being placed with the First Recon, the Elite of the US Marine Corps at their forward position in Kuwait in the build up to battle. Wright goes into great detail ...
