Sheep's Testicles and Karaoke Massage
Review of A Cooks Tour - Anthony Bourdain by Silverback

Advantages: Dozens of delicious and dodgy dinners
Disadvantages: It's vegetarian hell!

...this swaggering, gung-ho account of a year-long global culinary gross-out, he despatches, or witnesses the bloody deaths of, a pig, a lamb, several rabbits, a turkey and a cobra. I wasn't totally surprised by the carnage. I had read Bourdain's previous, autobiographical 'Kitchen Confidential'. He describes that book as "an obnoxious and overtestosteroned account of my life in the restaurant business". It was all that and more. It took the reader ...
...was never going to be a genteel affair. If American celebrity chef Bourdain is not totally honest in his justifications for the brutal, foulmouthed world of the restaurant kitchen, he is at least open about his motivation for writing 'A Cook's Tour'. On the back of the success of 'Kitchen Confidential' he persuades an editor to allow him a culinary grand tour. Ostensibly 'in search of the perfect meal' (the book's subtitle), he would get to play ... Read review

The realities of a revolution
Review of A Lifelong Passion: Nicholas & Alexandra - Andrei Maylunas, Sergei Mironenko by Salgirl

Advantages: Totally factual
Disadvantages: You already know the ending

...their goal was to produce a book that respected the memories of those involved while explaining the awful predicament they were placed in, then this achieves it and much, much more. Totally factual, fascinating, absorbing and sometimes shocking, we see the start of the great romance between Alexandra and Nicholas before their marriage. They corresponded daily and kept detailed diaries throughout their lives together which covered many events, both ...
...that he wouldn't die with a pinch of salt, believing them to be the fevered imaginings of of revolutionists, but I was wrong. And this book showed me how wrong I had been in my preconceptions about the time in history, the family, the revolutionists and their leaders. About Russia in general, really. The schools should find a way of introducing this book into the History lessons - there wouldn't be a better teacher. Detailed reviews are obviously ... Read review

Philip Ilott - This is Your Life
Review of A Smile on the Face of God - Adrian Plass by Kukana

Advantages: Inspiring book about a charming man who overcomes all sorts of problems
Disadvantages: Might offend some who don't understand the Christian background

...Apparently he appeared for a while on a television programme called 'Company', but I'm not much of a TV-watcher and had never heard of that either. However I'm a great fan of the Christian author Adrian Plass, best known for his satirical diaries, and when I like an author I try and collect all their books. That's why we have 'A Smile on the Face of God', the biography of Philip Ilott, written by Adrian Plass. Philip Ilott was born in 1936 to a ...
...He was confined to a garden shed every day after school, before his mother got home to let him into the house. She wouldn't let him in by himself in case he made it untidy. She never hugged him or gave him any form of affection, yet when his father was away she abused her her son sexually at night. The one bright spark in Philip's week was his regular visit to his grandmother, his mother's mother, who loved her grandson and gave him the cuddles and ... Read review

****A More Deserved Life****
Review of Abandoned: The True Story of a Little Girl Who Didn't Belong - Anya Peters by moogi48

Advantages: Compelling
Disadvantages: N/A

This is the first book I've read from Anya Peters, my daughter-in-law gave it to me to read. Through reading it all my emotions surfaced, parts of it shocked me, other parts amused me and it also made me cry, but I couldn't stop reading it although I was sickened by events in the book. Anya Peters has captured what it was like to be an outcast and to not belong to a family unit, although she suffered mental and physical abuse from her cousins, who ...
...loved them and wanted to be a part of their family, but she was never really accepted. This book is not for the faint hearted and if you don't like to read of cruelty, deprivation and hate then you had better leave it alone because this is real life, Anya's real life and it wasn't pretty. She was abused by her Uncle in a very depraved way and this book tells it as it was in sickening detail, it also deals with a family's shame about what has happened ... Read review
