Sex for the Over Sixties? Not a Lot!
Review of A Round Heeled Woman - Jane Juska by
suesie
Advantages: Well written, amusing in parts, very candid
Disadvantages: self deprecation of the author's style detracts from the merits
...I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me." So ran Jane Juska's personal ad. in her favourite journal, " The New York Review of Books" and it is here that her tale begins. The term " round-heeled woman" apparently means a woman of easy virtue! This together with the subtitle, "My Late-Life Adventures in Sex and Romance" suggests a titillating read, especially for ladies of a certain age, ... ...A friend handed this book to me as a gift after she had felt unable to get to grips with it and I was more than happy to take over the task for, at the risk of making younger readers feel uneasy if not disgusted, I felt it might be a worthwhile and revealing read, highlighting the continuing sexual needs of women who may be considered well past their prime. Moreover, for me, any woman with a devotion to Trollope, my own favourite nineteenth century ...

Descent into madness
Review of An Unquiet Mind - Kay Redfield Jamison by
Trev15
Advantages: See Op
Disadvantages: See Op
...one of its many sufferers. An Unquiet Mind is the true memoir of Jamison's extended descent into 'madness'. Born into a middle-class American family, Jamison was blessed with prosperous parents, intelligence and self-confidence. But along with her father and elder sister, she was prone to periods of severe 'black' moods. Jamison accepted these episodes as just being part of her personality. . . until. . . by the time she had settled into her Doctorate, ... ...and vibrant disposition. An unquiet mind is a brave personal story, which, no doubt, could have cost the author dearly in terms of her professional life. It is not a book geared for certain groups but is for anyone with preconceived notions of mental health. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of all is Jamison's explanations of the positive aspects of her condition and the europhoria brought... As a result of this, her memoir is also an educational ...

Review of Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion - Izabella St James by
josie.marie
Advantages: gives a truer idea of life at the mansion
Disadvantages: names of celebs are removed! I want to know who did what!
I'm always interested in biographies/stories of peoples lives and after watching Girls of the Playboy Mansion a "true to life" look at life in the playboy mansion, i began to wonder what truths they left out to keep a reasonably clean image of playboy. I read that this gave a real insight into the life at the mansion and the girls, and what the girls really had to do to become playmates.
The fact that the author is well educated shows another side ... ...has their ideas about what goes on in Hef's bedroom but this book proves that the unthinkable is possible.
Its a hardback book, isnt too long and isnt filled with addition lies just to make it longer! Its really interesting, if you want to know about it but theres no real story, i'd recommend if you like biographies & have an interest in playboy. ...

Climbing The Mango Trees
Review of Climbing The Mango Trees - A Memoir Of A Childhood In India - Madhur Jaffrey by
VC81
Advantages: A beautiful and evocotive read, well-illustrated, bonus family recipes.
Disadvantages: none
...of numerous cookery books. In Climbing The Mango Trees she tells the story of her childhood, growing up in a wealthy, very extended family in Delhi.
Madhur dedicates her book to her grandparents for 'helping to make their grandchildren who we all are'. The majority of her reminiscences are delightful, enjoyable childhood recollections and reflections, which are a pleasure to read. There are, however, some heart-rendering moments, and running throughout ... ...any literary awards for style, Climbing The Mango Trees is a thoroughly enchanting tale of a bygone age in an exotic land. This book is an interesting read, written from the heart. Jaffrey evokes the colours, tastes, sounds and smells of her childhood superbly. I would highly recommend this to any fan of autobiographies, contemporary history, and especially lovers of exotic foods. This charming memoir, from such a high achieving and popular lady ...
