Little girl lost.... then found!
Review of Little Girl Lost - Barbie Probert - Wright & Jean Ritchie by
sarahbarrow
Advantages: Shows a reverse perspective.
Disadvantages: Heartbreaking at times.
...six, makes this sometimes a little difficult to read and comprehend. ( I have a six year old daughter and the idea of her seeing the atrocities that the author did is heartbreaking to me).
Amongst all the fear, desperation, hunger and complete and utter exhaustion is the story of the true hero's of this book……. The people.
The true humanitarian feeling you get throughout the entire book is astounding, the people who have nothing and nowhere to ... ...a stranger, the people who fear for their homes due to the "invasion" of the English and like, who at a moments notice, will have someone "billeted" to them, ( this is what they called the refugees, after they were allocated a bed or home in the village they happen to come across) and show the refugees unforgettable kindness by providing a warm bed for the night and a delicious meal to boot.
This book is full of sadness, and the stories of the complete ...

Ramsay at his best
Review of Gordon Ramsay's Playing with Fire - Gordon Ramsay by
colzieboy
Advantages: Informative
Disadvantages: None
People have the impression of Gordon as an arrogant, foul mouthed chef. However, this is the persona he adopts to achieve his goals successfully, and this read highlights how he has got there.
A follow on from Humble Pie, the book goes in to more depth on the business side of his life, where risks were taken to get where he is today. Lessons that he has learnt along the way are both informative and amusing. His plight to go from a well known UK ... ...What we do learn about Gordon is his passion to develop the people who have been most loyal to him. Angela Hartnett is mentioned a few times throughout the book, as it goes from him owning his first restaurant right through to his MNC Gordon Ramsay Holdings. Loyalty is shown to be a key factor in his life, and as he has progressed, so have the people who have helped him get there.
A great read and very inspiring! ...

Left by the authorities - Peters story
Review of Unloved - Peter Roche by
ronanracer
Advantages: A real eye opener
Disadvantages: Not for the faint hearted
I probably have every new book that comes out that tells a story of childhood abuse and neglect, but this is one of the most compelling story that I have read that come under that genre umbrella.
We think that children of our generation are sometimes missed from the loop when it comes to abuse and neglect, but this is what I would call scraping the bottom of the barrel and takes place in the 60's.
The story pulls the heartstrings, as does every ... ...but the difference with this story is that the author Peter, was pictured (that picture is shown on the cover) headed up the NSPCC campaign at that time, he was two years old.
And then they just forgot about him, albeit the lady that was present at the time, but she never attempted to contact him, he approached her many many years later.
Infact Peter didn't even recognise himself in this picture.
But read the book, it doesn't just stop at being ...

God's Callgirl
Review of Gods Call Girl - Carla Van Raay by
carysb
Advantages: Gripping, informative
Disadvantages: May be found quite hard going
Carla Van Raay's autobiography "Gods Callgirl" details the life of a naive, immature girl, then woman who is devoted to God but goes from obedient convent girl to sexual prostitute over the course of her life, but remains as naive as ever.
This life story is divided into three parts and develops the tale of this Dutch girl's life over the course of the book. Part one examines the life of a child abused by her father, yet finding she felt abandoned ... ...God from a very young age. As a school girl she idolising the convent and her sole ambition in life is to serve God as a nun in one of Australia's many convents.
As an early teenager feeling unloved at home by her family yet supporting her mother in everyday chores and childcare of her brothers and sister she found herself believing she was a product of the devil. A problem no confession could speak of, and no action could heal.
Part two follows ...

Karina
Review of Karina has Down Syndrome - Cheryl Rogers, Gun Dolva by
bluejules
Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *
...book describes the developmental stages Karina reaches. As these are later than a typical child, I felt really pleased when she reached them. I felt as though someone was telling me about a child I knew, and I felt almost as emotional about it. There is also information about the professional help that Karina received in the early years of her life. I think this will be helpful to new parents of a child with special needs. There are contact details ... ...helpful to British parents)
Karina has an older sister and a younger brother and I enjoyed reading about the family as a whole even though the book is focused mainly on Karina. It was nice to read how the family coped and I enjoyed reading about things they did together.
~ What did I think and would I recommend it? ~
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was nicely written and I was interested in learning about the development of this lovely ...
