Pepys - an alternative to the diaries?
Review of Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self - Claire Tomalin by
confusion
Advantages: Much more readable than the diaries
Disadvantages: None really
I first came across Samuel Pepys in a TV serial, with Peter Sallis (of Last of the Summer Wine fame) in the lead role. That was a good few years ago – anyone else remember it? Since then I have considered reading the diaries themselves. However I have always been put off by the thought that it might be a tedious read, if modern diarists were anything to go by, and the comments of others who did try Pepys.
That all changed earlier this year when I ... ...in a three for two display in one of the High Street bookstores. The cover proclaimed that the book was the “2002 Whitbread Book of the Year” and that the Sunday Times had described it as “A fabulously entertaining biography of the great diarist”
The book itself is published by Penguin at £8.99, and is 500 pages long. More than 100 pages are reference pages, backing up quotes in the main text. In this respect the book itself is very thorough, not ...

Swipe, Sign, It's All Mine
Review of Save Karyn - Karyn Bosnak by
AnitaM
Advantages: A true insight into the world of debt
Disadvantages: You might not agree with her method of trying to clear the debt
...day for a month, she'll save $60 on bus fare so that's like getting the sandals for only $100, can't help but raise a smile. And her responses to some of the emails she receives after setting up the website are very funny. I genuinely believe that she didn't have any idea of the true mess she was really in until it was too late. After all, she was in a well paid job, working in television and on a 6 figure salary. She really thought that she could ... ...her. There is also a poignant moment in the book as this all was happening in 2000 and 2001 and the story crosses September 2001. Events that happened in the world at that time are touched upon as she realises it's not the Prada purses or Gucci sunglasses that are important. The terrorist attack also had personal consequences for Karyn as the light hearted TV shows that she was involved in producing suddenly weren't being watched as people tuned ...

Scar Tissue
Review of Scar Tissue - Larry Sloman, Anthony Kiedis by
luna1469
Advantages: Deep truthful insight into the RHCP frontman
Disadvantages: Finished too quick
I found this book to be fascinating from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. It is an honest and truthful account of Anthony's life and I feel that he was very brave in his disclosure of information. It was shocking and moving and had me laughing and crying at different places.
It was one of the most compelling books I have ever read and I think i finished it in less than 3 days. Highly recommend to anyone whether a Chili's fan or not.
The ... ...to Chili. I could read it over and over again. He has pulled his life together from the brink of drug and alcohol induced catastrophe to a clean life. I sincerely hope that he stays that way and that he and the boys carry on producing the great music that just keeps gettting better year after year.
The book helped me to understand why the lyrics are so poignant and deep and I admire this man more and more

Seabiscuit
Review of Seabiscuit: The True Story of Three Men and a Racehorse - Laura Hillenbrand by
teacherofhooch
Advantages: Wonderful insight into human nature.
Disadvantages: None
I toyed with the idea of writing a film review on Seabiscuit but when the book came galloping into my hands, after watching the film I may add, I felt the book needed a review too.
I enjoy a little ‘flutter’ and have often had a win on the ‘underdog’
A friend of mine, who owns a horse, could not wait to see the film, and then she commented it was boring for the first hour as it was not about the horse.
I felt she missed something very important ... ...just about a race horse, it is quintessentially about people; people who lived in an era in America which was very tough and very depressing for many.
This book was the winner of the William Hill sports book of the year award and I can certainly see why.
Stuart Wavell of the The Sunday Times states;
‘A rip-roaring narrative…Hillenbrand tells the story of the triumphs and tribulations of her cast of misfits with flair and skill.
The story is 361 ...
