Review of Stoned - Andrew Loog Oldham by
steerpyke
Advantages: an insight into the early days of rock and roll
Disadvantages: wallows in the authors self promotion
There are many moments in popular culture that it would be fascinating to be a fly on the wall too. These moments not only change the lives of the people present but also have repercussions that resonate throughout the whole world, the oft-cited Butterfly Effect. There is a moment in this book which documents such an event, a chance conversation in a London Pub that united a band and a manager that would take the music world by storm and open up ... ...more of that later.
Andrew Loog Oldham grew up in post war England raised only by his mother at a time when single parents were frowned upon. His mothers struggle to give them both the lifestyle that she thought that they both deserved can be seen to have shaped the boys early attitude and made him into someone always looking for something more than he had. It also made him something of a rebel. These two factors, as well as developing a talent ...

The sins of the father
Review of Stolen Lives: Twenty years in a Desert Jail - Malika Oufkir, Michele Fitoussi by
mystikchick17
Advantages: Tragic yet inspirational story of survival
Disadvantages: none
...own unique upbringing, a first stolen life. At the age of 4, her presence was requested at court to be a companion to the Princess Lalla Mina, and so she was taken from her parents to be raised at the Palace. Certainly, to most of us, the concept of growing up in a harem in a royal palace sounds highly exotic and mysterious, but Malika reveals a life of isolation and loneliness from being separated from her beloved mother. She was considered to be ... ...abuse. Her first stolen life is given back to her when she finally leaves the palace, and for a portion of the book, her joy and sense of freedom (and rebellion) is palpable. She wants to be an actress, she lives in Paris, sneaks out at night; in short, she has a relatively normal teenage life. What makes these portions of the book so much more poignant is the way these memories come back to her while she languishes in jail, and how they become absorbed ...

carysb
Advantages: A Learning Curve
Disadvantages: The Topic Should Never Exist To Need Writing About
My Synopsis
'Shame' is an honest account of a woman who grew up in an Asian community ruled by the gossip of the Gurdwara in Derby. This book outlines the pressures and restrictions of being a girl brought up by strict Sikh values in a community where 'Shame' and 'Dishonour' is the ultimate betrayal and leads to being shunned and disowned by the entire family and local community.

This project was set up to support those affected by domestic abuse and honour based crimes, the making of the project is detailed throughout the final 12 chapters of the book where Jasvinder explains how her return to education and own personal experiences inspired her to provide the services she desperately needed from the ...

Staying Alive
Review of Sky Burial - Xinran by
hiker
Advantages: Simple, beautiful, moving
Disadvantages: None ~ so long as you're not looking for action-adventure
...and back again. Sky Burial is a translation from the original Chinese version and we’re told it is slightly different. Xinran “worked closely with her translators and editor to make sure all elements of the book were accessible to non-Chinese readers”. I wonder what the differences are, and whether they matter. I also wonder, as always when reading translations, whether the style reflects the original. I hope so…because it works so well. The simplicity ... ...telling of it. There is no complicated imagery, no “graphic detail” and yet it is graphic in a literal sense. You can feel the very bleakness of the land, and the contrasting warmth of its people, smell the animals and taste the sweet butter tea, purely through them becoming familiar.
Kejun’s story, which we discover at the end, has the nobility required to turn Wen’s journey from folly into a real quest and the discovery of the truth justifies ...
