Get crafty with the past
Review of Picture the Past - Joan Chambers, Molly Hood by
danielalong
Advantages: lots of ideas
Disadvantages: none
Picture the Past
These publications seem to be around forever, and in fact, this one was published in 1992, so they have been going strong for quite some time. Whilst involved on a recent topic of Ancient Greece with some Upper Key Stage 2 children, I raked this out, and found it had some really useful ideas; no need for me to actually have to think about displays, just open the book, and hey presto.
The pictures are of actual displays completed ... ...by full instructions and a picture of the finished make. The instructions are such that older children will be able to follow then, and because the pictures are usually quite self explanatory, younger children could have a go with minimal explanation, as long as they were given the appropriate materials.
At the back of the book there are a series of line drawings, mainly relating to making Victorian decorations, and these can be photocopied, without ...

Pullman reveals the trump card!!!
Review of His Dark Materials III: The Amber Spyglass - Philip Pullman by
pmcds
Advantages: Brilliant end to a brilliant trilogy. Short chapters: ideal stopping places
Disadvantages: Much longer than the others. Very descriptive in the middle.
A little short of amonth ago, I woke up on Christmas morning and opened my presents. One of these was Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. I had eagerly awaited these (guessing I would get them for Christmas) and tucked into them immediately.
The first two in the trilogy, namely 'Northern Lights' and 'The Subtle Knife', leave you thristy for more. Pullman creates a fantastic tale over the course of the trilogy, leaving the reader needing ... ...first two books, over 500 pages long, and at points in the middle, it seems to drag slightly.I found myself pushing through long descriptive paragraphs without incidences of conversation to break up the monotony. These descriptions were integral to the plot, as is everything, but I felt Pullman was close to going off at a tangent in these parts.
Pullman touches heavily on the religious nature of the books in this third and final installment. I had ...

Esio Trot
Review of Esio Trot - Roald Dahl by
karen1986
Advantages: Anyone should find this amusing!
Disadvantages: I can't think of any!
This shorter story by the legendary Roald Dahl is an engaging tale, the plot is simple, funny and easy to follow. From the start you are instantly drawn into the happy, if not lonely world of Mr Hoppy and his love for Mrs Silver and his quest to get her to fall in love with him and notice him more than her beloved tortoise Alfie.
This book is easy to read and I never seem to find it boring, I read it when I was little and no doubt my child (due ... ...Mr Hoppy and his cunning idea to get Mrs Silver to love him. I am sure she will laugh as I did at the way Mr Hoppy helps Mrs Silver to make Alfie bigger with his 'tortoise language' and the fact that it is really just a clever plan on Mr Hoppy's part rather than the magic of tortoise language! Without revealing too much of the plot (you want some surprises!) I can say that thankfully there is a happy ending to the story of lonely Mr Hoppy, (that ...

Daisy Meadows fairy books
Review of Saffron the Yellow Fairy - Daisy Meadows by
violetliberty
Advantages: Lovely, descriptive text
Disadvantages: wish it was longer
I'm so glad I stumbled across this author, which is how I found these books.
My little girl is delighted by them and the fact that there are so many series just enhances the pleasure.
They are simply but descriptively written with lots of sparkle, twinkle and glitter.
The baddies are just naughty but not at all frighteneing, just right for bedtime and the fairies, well, what can I say. Daisy describes each one beautifully right down to their individual ...

The Hell where youth and laughter go!
Review of Remembrance - Theresa Breslin by
tange
Advantages: A poignant, thought provoking story of becoming an adult in WW1.
Disadvantages: A bit graphic in places...make sure you have a tissue handy!
...my latest book review. Remembrance by Theresa Breslin was recommended to me by a number of friends ~ they said I would enjoy it and that it needed to be reviewed to encourage others to read and (hopefully) enjoy it too. I borrowed a copy from work and settled down to read….a few hours later and I had gone through a whole gammit of emotions and completed a wonderful book.
~~~THE AUTHOR.
Theresa Breslin is a librarian who lives in Lenzie in Scotland. ... ...As I said before, Remembrance is set in World War One. The initial setting is the small Scottish village of Stratharden in 1915 and the story revolves around a group of five teenagers from two families. They come from different social backgrounds, but the insular nature of the community has meant that they have grown up together and their lives are linked.
The War has been going on around them for a while, but they it hasn’t really had much of an ...
