I had a cat once...
Review of Goodbye Mog - Judith Kerr by
hippo117
Advantages: Better than other childrens books on bereavement
Disadvantages: None.
...Brief Review Goodbye Mog is probably my favourite children’s book, written and Illustrated by Judith Kerr. The book tells us about the passing of a family’s cat, told from the cat’s point of view. This unusual perspective immediately increased my interest in the outcome. Mog passes away and the family mourn, while Mog watches on as a ghost cat. The family get a new kitten, who is constantly frightened of everything. So Mog steps in and teaches the ... ...kitten becomes a good pet, and is no longer frightened. The family are happy that they’ve finally got a new family pet, but, and I quote. “But I’ll always remember Mog”. This is by far the best children’s book about coping with bereavement, it handles the subject impeccably.
Personal Response I particularly like this children’s book, so this will obviously mean I have a very biased point of view. From the front cover you know that this book is going ...

Review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter 6) - J.K. Rowling by
London_chic
Advantages: Is a speical edition so may go up in value
Disadvantages: They are harder to get hold of
...be one of my faveourite harry potter books out of the series. Its very gripping I couldn't put the book down until I had read every letter on in the book. So I litterally read for 3 days solid in my spare time. The plot is wonderful like all potter books. With new twists and turns. At this point in the series the story is turning a lot dark. The book will have you fooled to the end. It will make you laugh, cry and smile.I was so involved withb the ...

Out Of The Hitler Time
Review of Out of the Hitler Time - Judith Kerr by
fizzz
Advantages: Extremely well written and enjoyable read.
Disadvantages: none
Out Of The Hitler Time is the compilation of what was originally three separate books written by Judith Kerr:
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
The Other Way Round
A Small Person Far Away
These three books together follow one family’s story during and after World War Two. The books are based on Judith Kerr’s own experiences, as she tells us in a short piece at the end of the book.
The family in question is a German Jewish family, Anna, her elder ... ...flight in the early 1930s from Germany, first to Switzerland then France and finally ending up in Britain. The second book covers the time of the war, with the family in Britain, and the third book tells us of their life afterwards when the children have grown up and made their own lives.
The book is written from Anna’s own point of view, which I found extremely interesting as it gave a running commentary of how life felt for someone in her position ...

Be careful what you wish for!
Review of The Fish Who Could Wish - John Bush, Korky Paul by
kingfisher111
Advantages: lovely story and illustrations
Disadvantages: none
The Fish Who Could Wish', written by John Bush and Korky Paul, is a fun little picture book aimed at small children but with a bit of a moral at the end too!
The entire story is written in rhyme and takes place at the bottom of the sea where we meet a very unusual but lucky fish! This fish is different because every time he makes a wish it actually comes true! This fish wishes for all sorts of unusual things - for example a car and a castle, a horse ... ...and all of a sudden the ocean bed is transformed as it snows for a week! Another time he wishes he could fly and then is transported to flying all around the earth - twice in one night! So as you can see, all this fish's wishes, however wierd and wonderful, all come true.
One day though, the fish, who is rather silly wishes that he could be just like all the other fish in the ocean. Of course this wish comes true as well, but of course all the other ...

Watch Out For The Wicked Wizard
Review of The Princess and the Wizard - Lydia Monks, Julia Donaldson by
Keelar
Advantages: Lovely illustrations, catchy story
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit too long for a younger child
The Princess and The Wizard - another wonderful book by Julia Donaldson.
This is another one of my daughter's faves although perhaps the story is a little bit long for her at the moment but she loves the pictures, especially the glittery ones.
It's the story of Princess Eliza, who gets captured & whisked away (on her 7th birthday of all days!) by a wicked wizard who likes turning people to stone. Luckily before she is taken away, her fairy godmother ... ...colour and changing her shape'. The wizard isn't impressed and replies 'changing her colour and changing her shape will never help Princess Eliza escape'.
So Princess Eliza gets seven chances to escape and each day she changes herself into something new, such as a blue fish, yellow chick, green grasshopper... But the wizard always finds her and takes her back to his castle to do some horrible work for him. On her final chance to escape, Eliza realises ...
