Enjoyable childs read
Review of Mairi's Mermaid - Michael Morpurgo by
emcell
Advantages: Words simple with bright interesting illustrations and speech bubbles allow your child to take part encouraging expression within their reading
Disadvantages: Book a little flimsy
On my daughter bringing home her scholastic book club form , knowing that she was always so interested in Mermaids , I decided on buying this particular book on which recieving it I was impressed.
The book on close inspection I thought to be a bit flimsy but it was extremely bright in colour and the illustrations were as expressive as the words and bearing in mind that at 5 she cannot as yet read with confidence the words are big enough that should ... ...she can hold the book to take in the pictures.
The words flow well with a story line about a little girl who can not swim but so wishes to and in her doubts of never being able to comes upon a little mermaid of whom she saves from a nasty crab , in return the mermaids family helps her to learn to swim with great surprise from her own family.
Little speech bubbles from the actual characters in the book allow your child to become actively involved ...

Lightning HAS STRUCK!
Review of Missing: When Lightning Strikes - Meg Cabot by
Jonni_boi
Advantages: The best book in the world
Disadvantages: You can't keep reading unless you have the next book
This book was exceptionally good; it beats all books ever made, well in my opinion anyway! This auth writes under 2 names both Meg Cabot and Jenny Carroll... Meg Cabot is widely known as she was the one who wrote the princess diaries. But before she changed her name to her proper name, she used to write under the name Jenny Carroll, this was because she didn't want people to know that it was her who was writing, but eventually she decided she wanted ... ...went chaotic but changed all the book covers again with new designs but definitely making sure the author name said Meg Cabot.
Meg Cabot a young girl spent her child life in pursuit of air conditioning - where she found in a public library, where she happened to spend her time. She has lived in a few countries, like France and California but she now resides in New York City with her family which includes a pet cat!
Now enough about Meg Cabot, and ...

Stepping stone to literacy genius
Review of Mr William Shakespeare Plays - Marcia Williams by
maisiemouse123
Advantages: Short, colourful, comic stlye short stories
Disadvantages: Ideal for 8's and over
This book was brought home by my 8 year old last week, and she didn't want to put it down. The stories include:-
Romeo and Juliet
A midsummer Night's Dream
Hamlet
Julius Caesar
Macbeth
The Winter's Tale
The Tempest
Each of the stories are written in the style of a comic strip and the borders of the page have extra characters "commenting" on the story, good idea however a little distracting at times. Each story is a great recap for those of ...

Watch Out For The Wicked Wizard
Review of The Princess and the Wizard - Lydia Monks, Julia Donaldson by
Keelar
Advantages: Lovely illustrations, catchy story
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit too long for a younger child
The Princess and The Wizard - another wonderful book by Julia Donaldson.
This is another one of my daughter's faves although perhaps the story is a little bit long for her at the moment but she loves the pictures, especially the glittery ones.
It's the story of Princess Eliza, who gets captured & whisked away (on her 7th birthday of all days!) by a wicked wizard who likes turning people to stone. Luckily before she is taken away, her fairy godmother ... ...colour and changing her shape'. The wizard isn't impressed and replies 'changing her colour and changing her shape will never help Princess Eliza escape'.
So Princess Eliza gets seven chances to escape and each day she changes herself into something new, such as a blue fish, yellow chick, green grasshopper... But the wizard always finds her and takes her back to his castle to do some horrible work for him. On her final chance to escape, Eliza realises ...

A Wonderfully magic children's story
Review of The Butterfly Lion - Michael Morpurgo by
Jemma100
Advantages: magical, easy to read
Disadvantages: none
This is the touching story of a young boy called Bertie told by his widowed wife after his death to another young boy called Jack after he finds himself in her garden after running away from boarding school (the same school Bertie went to)
Bertie grew up in Africa where met his "Butterfly lion" but had to leave him when he got sent to England to go to boarding school.
I don't want to give too much of the story away but i think any children (or ... ...which would be easy as the print is large and there are only 127 pages which contain some non-coloured pictures(by Christian Birmingham), which help illustrate and capture the magic of the story wonderfully.
I got made to read it for my Uni course, but i am so glad it was this book as its such a beautiful story and had me actually crying in parts!
This is the first Michael Morpurgo book i have read, but i will certainly be reading a few others ...
